We began the day with one of Mr Vye’s special assemblies where the children were told about the story of the Rooster. At lunch, the dining room was decorated with Chinese lamps and dragons and the pupils enjoyed their specially prepared Chinese lunch. The prawn crackers and noodles were a particular favourite of the children. Each class learned more about how the Chinese celebrate the beginning of a New Year in a range of activities in the afternoon. Our Reception children acted out the Chinese New Year story in Dance. They counted coins into Chinese New Year envelopes and we had our very own Chinese New Year animal race using toy cars labelled with pictures of animals. The goat and tiger won in our class version of the race. The children also made Chinese New Year lanterns and we played some loud drums to scare away bad luck. We had a delicious Chinese meal provided by Jimmy's mum. The children said that it was the best day ever! In Year 1 the children looked at the story and made some paper chain dragons and lanterns and our Year 2 enjoyed getting crafty to celebrate Chinese New Year. Some children very carefully made beautiful fans whilst others made rooster faces. In Year 5 they learnt about the story of the Willow Pattern, then tried to include all the elements into their designs, we hope you like Matthew’s willow pattern below. The children in Year 6 used their paper cutting and folding skills to create their own Chinese dragons. A fantastic day was had by all!
