winner of inter -School competition
Child of Migrant worker from the Apna Skool education centre wins an inter school competition Sangeeta studying in the 4th grade at the Apna Skool education centre at Dhamikheda stood third in an inter-school school competition held by the Kanpur zoological park as part of the Vanya praani Saptaha 2012. Sangeeta’s parents are construction workers. She has been studying at the Apna Skool centre since grade 1. Apna Skool, Migrant Labour Project (MLP), founded by Vijaya Ramachandran in 1994, (which is part of a voluntary organization in Kanpur, Jagriti Bal Vikas Samiti), is a network of schools for children of migrant labourers at construction sites and brick kilns in and around Kanpur, U.P. From one Apna skool centre with 40 children it has grown into a network of 25 Apna Skool centres with more than 1000 students, of which about 45 % students are girls.
Mission of Apna Skools
The mission of Apna Skool is to provide free education to the children of migrant workers. For a population long neglected, Apna Skools adopt the unique concept of taking the school to the children by running education centers at construction sites and brick kilns. The migrant workers’ children are mostly from Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam and some districts in Uttar Pradesh.
