NEW YEAR GREETINGS The Executive Committee (EC) and the Board of Directors (BoD) of the Hindu Community and Cultural Center (HCCC) Wish You All a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year Dear Devotees, It is a great privilege for us to provide you with this year-end update describing the state of our Hindu Community and Cultural Center. The financial health of our organization is sound and is rebounding from the effects of sagging economy and slow recovery in the valley. We are proud to say we made progress on all fronts. On one hand the donations continued to increase over the last year and on the other hand we have exercised fiscal controls. The religious services continued to attract thousands of devotees. Our focus on Y&E has paid dividends. And we made major strides in the area of Master Planning (MPC) and in HCCC By-Law Review (BRC). On the financial front we will exceed last year donations by about 400K and are expecting to reach $2 million mark in total revenues for FY 2004. Thanks to you all for making this possible with your generous donations. On the religious front, a host of programs were held through out the year and some of these programs were attended by record number of devotees. Over all, this year devotee participation seems to be higher than previous years. We attribute this to higher degree of “Devotee Satisfaction” and improved publicity of our programs. Our Annadana (free food program) became more popular and continues to receive apprecia- tions. More devotees are stepping forward regularly to sponsor Annadana program. Our devotees continue to prefer HCCC Assembly Hall over other popular loca- tions to celebrate their family events particularly for weddings and such related ceremonies. We have given more emphasis this year in attracting youngsters in Youth and education area and to Human Services areas. Thanks to the dedicated team of vol- unteers who worked very hard in this part of our programs. We have held a very successful fundraising event in July and collected over 10% of revenues about $220K as donations. Most of these funds are restricted for construction and such short term improvements based on our needs. More funds are added to our endowment fund this year and now Endowment funds stands at 460K. When the opportunity presented itself, HCCC has acquired a neighborhood house right by the side of our kitchen. At the corporate level The following two major strategic initiatives were executed this year: 1. The Master Planning Committee 2004 made significant progress and released several conceptual plans for discussion in our community. Two town hall meetings were held and where devotees provided their views, comments and feedback. Discussions were held with our temple Architect, Mutthiah Stapaty who visited us in the month of December and suggested several valuable modifications. MPC is incorporating his recommendations into the planning process. This planning process consists of many steps after several of our own iterations. These steps involve neighborhood hearings, city council hearings and planning com- mission approvals before we receive a final approved Master Plan from the city. Such a Master plan will enable HCCC to develop the property in stages to meet our community needs. We all should pitch in to the construction reserves. The plans include our short term needs for improved facilities in the areas of park- ing, kitchen, meeting halls and storage as well as long term needs of the community. All these plans would require about $6 million over the next 5 years and your valuable support. 2. By-Law Review committee was formed with a charter to review and update HCCC By-Laws to meet our present and future needs and to improve the Governance of HCCC. This committee is formed with dedicated community members who are thoroughly knowledgeable with the by-laws. Some of these members have helped define the by-laws 25 years ago. This is indeed a challenge to complete the whole task in a period of 6-months. As most of you have witnessed the team demonstrated an impressive show of their work in the last Dec 12th SC meeting, exclusively convened to amend the by-laws. Interestingly the key amendments are all approved by a overwhelming majority of attendees. The rest of the amendments will be presented in a subsequent

session to be held in January. —Cont. on page 6 Margasira / Paushya January 2005 Dhanur / Makara Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday T hursday Friday Saturday RAHU KALA OM NAMAH SHIVAYA OM NAMO NARAYANAYA 4:30 to 6:00 pm 7:30 to 9:00 am 3:00 to 4:30 pm 12:00 to 1:30 pm 1:30 to 3:00 pm 10:30 to 12 noon 9:00 to 10:30 am 30 31 1 Panchami : 11:18 Shasti : 11:50 Shasti : 20:32 Hasta : 23:08 Chitra : 24:06 P.Phalguni : 14:09 New Year’s Day

...Contd. from page 1... On the operations front we did well in different areas: Religious: Conducted a host of annual religious events. Helped promote unity among the priest community and improved devotee services in most areas. Overhauled pooja scheduling services. Promoted more involvement from different communities and presently in the process of adding another north Indian Priest to meet the needs of the north Indian community. Human Services: Grant-in- Aid and Health Fair programs were two major events held very successfully. HS runs the health clinic for health advisory consultation, pro- vided grants to local service (fire and police) and human services organizations, distributed food and blankets at community Thanksgiving dinner. We have developed a very good rapport with the local community as a service oriented organization. Youth Activities: Many programs were conducted this year with a lot of enthusiasm. Art Exhibition, Ganesh Chaturdi and Annual Youth event were most significant events and have attracted youngsters from 6+ to adults. The library is well utilized by Children and adults regularly. It is very impressive to see the youngsters participating in chanting shlokas, story telling, and acting in short plays and many more. Cultural Activities: Many Cultural activities were held by professionals and youth alike. This year we have seen Cultural activity taking center seat in fundraising program. Treasury: Treasury has tightened the belts on expense across the board. With the help of e-voucher system and QB expense recognition methods, developed a smooth flow for quick turn around time (1 week) for payments. Introduced Bill pay into the system for routine payments. Presented an impressive budget for CY 2005. Human Resources (HR): We have successfully managed employee turn over and have hired very good set of employees. Also, we have been getting excellent support from COMMITTEED VOLUNTEERS very reliably. The HCCC Employee handbook is now in its final stage of completion. Standard processes for hiring, training, reviewing employee complaints, employee conduct and contract terminations are being developed. A more comprehensive vacation policy is being introduced for temple employees balancing the needs of both the employee and the HCCC Maintenance: Executed several maintenance programs to make sure the premises are safe, secure and well kept. Cleanliness was given highest priority. Installed a much needed walk-in-cooler facility for the Kitchen. Working on renovating bathrooms. Roof and ceiling for Kanaka Durga shrine was renovated. Both Assembly Hall and the temple (interior) were painted. There are some more maintenance projects are identified for execution next year. Food Committee: “Annadana” – (enjoy free lunch on weekends) program is catching the attention of many devotees and became one of the popular programs at the temple. The kitchen is better equipped with new cooking appliances and walk-in cooler to handle the food supply for a large number of devotees. Laddu Prasadam is in very high demand but continues to be in short supply. Information System: e-vouchering method of approving expenses is perfected. Revenue recognition procedures are streamlined. IS system capabilities are fully utilized by our front desk employees, devotees and management to assess our revenues real time, to communicate to the devotees on temple current and planned programs and to receive feed back from devotees. The temple is continuing to receive high degree devotee satisfaction. Yet, there are several areas we can improve services to achieve excellence in devotee services. The reli- gious services continue to be the core activity for the temple. Home puja services continuous to be more popular. Our priests work very hard to provide these services at our homes while making sure that the services at the temple are not compromised. We can confidently say we have the best set of priests, Administrative staff, and the maintenance personnel needed to run our organization without whose dedicated sup- port we could not have achieved this success. We are also thankful to the members of the Steering Committee who placed their trust on us and the dedicated members of the past and present Executive Committee and the Board of Directors who continued to assist us. We acknowledge the last year committees efforts and thank them for set- ting a very good pace for the tear 2004. Finally, our community is blessed with a great spirit of sharing. All our devotees continuously share their time and resources for the benefit of our community. The unity and integrity demonstrated by our brothers and sisters stands out as sole reason behind our success over the last two and half decades. The HCCC management of 2004 respectfully salutes our community volunteers, program coordinators and donors for their steadfast support in all HCCC activities. The HCCC will be having its annual elections in January and our organization has maintained and cherished its democratic principles. We expect some members of this management team to leave and be replaced by another motivated team who will take the temple to even greater heights.

We wish you all the best in the coming years. With warm regards,

Krishna Reddy Goud Memula President, Executive Committee Chairman, Board of Directors

ANNUAL CHILDREN AND YOUTH DAY PROGRAM (CYD-2004)

On Saturday Nov 20th, Y&E Chair, Youth and Education team has conducted an outstanding program for youth. Lots of childeren and their parents participated in this day long program which ended at 10PM. The team worked hard for two months to pull together all resources needed to conduct this program. As a result, the response is so overwhelming that they had to reject several applications who tried to register at the last minute due to lack of space and time. In the morning, the opening ceremony was conducted by Pdt. Srinivasacharyulu , followed by Puja con- ducted by Pdt. Nageshwar Sastry on Saraswati, Laxmi, Ganesha. During this event over 50 children partici- pated in an impressive sloka chanting. It is indeed difficult to choose which one was better. They all performed extremely well. During the Youth Forum our wonderful children who adapted to this multicultural world, expressed their creative abilities in different ways in dance and singing. They got the best of both worlds. Of course the talent show was amazing a performance by over 100 kids who participated in dances, skits, mono acting , classical- veena and all different kinds of music. Next time we should have flute also. The grand finale of and Hanuman Chalisa was a great idea. (please note that kept the crowd flow till the end) Over all, the entire annual event was a great show. CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. SHANKAR AND HER TEAM DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS. Thanks to all the CYD team members, volunteers and sponsors. Also thanks to the priests, the office staff and the maintenance staff for their support for the event. Looking at the response, we must conduct this event twice a year.
