1 Director’s Message We need your help!!! As you know over the last few years, the Metro Region has been losing members at a faster pace due to our aging membership. We need your help to keep the region up and running. We lost our webmaster Pat Caruso, who was a GREAT contributor to our re- gion with the website and far beyond. We are looking for members to help us keep the website up and running. It takes the pressure off if we have more than one person doing it. Also, our editor Craig Handley, who has done a GREAT job, as editor of the Skyline would like to hand the job over in the near future. We would also need a few members to help us out with this. Our board has been busy taking on these tasks, but we need the help of some of our members to keep the club running as it should be. If you or anyone you know would be willing to help us with these tasks please feel free to contact me by phone or email. We can always use material for our magazine, whether it be a pic- ture of your car or any Classic with a write up, tech articles, or old photos of Classics….PLEASE send them to us and we will get them in the Skyline. As the spring season comes closer, I look forward to seeing you and your Classic at one of our upcoming events! — Ralph Marano Jr

3 4 “Mabel” 1929 Cadillac 341 B cabriolet by John P. Shibles

very car that I have owned since high school Ehas had a name. Including this Cadillac, Mabel. She is named after her first owner, Mabel Welch, from New Brunswick, New Jersey, who loved to take her out for Sunday drives. Cadillac shipping records con- firmed that this car was shipped new to a dealership in Newark, NJ, where Ms. Welch purchased her. During the mid-1950s, DeAngelis Cadillac offered Ms. Welch a new Cadillac in exchange for this car in order to showcase it in their dealership on Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick. She turned them down.

During the early 1960s, Earl Lewis form Jamesburg, New Jersey pur- chased the car from Ms. Welch’s estate. He had a small restoration shop and insisted on working on this Cadillac himself. Nine years later, in the midst of a divorce, Mr. Lewis’s wife demanded that the “other woman” -- this Cadillac -- be sold.

She was purchased by Wayne Green of Colts neck, new Jersey, who cared for her over the next 42 years. After Mr. Green passed away several years ago, his three granddaughters found me and we agreed that it was a natural sale -- as long as they continue to have visitation rights. Mabel is my very first Cadillac and I knew right away that she’s a keeper!

Mabel had sat resting in a Colts Neck barn for seven years, and thus needed mechanical attention. I spent three months get- ting her running, with the help of Jim Naughus. Mr. Naughus is the only mechanic that has worked on Mabel over the past 44 years, and I inherited him along with this Cadillac legacy.

I shipped Mabel down to Florida from New Jersey in early January, so that I could enjoy and share the experience of driv- ing her along A1A this winter. In fact, I drove her down A1A this morning to attend the Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance. This is only the third time that Mabel has crossed the New Jersey state line -- she is a true “Jersey Girl.”

Mabel is one of six surviving 1929 Cadillac 341 B cabriolets and I am humbled to own her.

6 METRO’S ANNUAL MEETING-2014 story by Joe Barnes, photos by Elaine Danielson

nce again the members of the Metro Region of the C.C.C.A. met for Ocommon interests, friendship and just a happy get together. The event was held at the popular Spanish Tavern in Mountainside, New Jersey. Our President, Ralph Marano Jr., welcomed us and introduced the Current Board members. He then gave a “State of the Region” 1 address by covering events of the past year and highlighted upcoming events for the New Year. He then congratulated the many volunteers that made the last year a success. The planning and organizing the many events was a major under- taking.

One of Ralph’s objectives for the upcoming year is both keeping our membership steady while attracting new members. One of his sug- gestions was educating young folks with the 2 fabulous classics.

A highlight of the event was recognition of long-term members. Receiving 60 year Membership Pins were Sonny Turnquist and Walter Wary. Cited for over 50 year members were Joseph Buono, Dennis Nash and John Smalley.

During dinner and hors’d’oerves, friends re- flected and shared their own experiences during the past year. As always, The Spanish Tavern outdid themselves with a delicious dinner. The only possible disappointment was the absence 1. (R-L) Stella and Stuart Blond, Dave Czirr, Joe Barnes, Mike Paone and guest of “Uncle Floyd.” See you next year. 2. 9 1938 Rolls - bodied Packard by Ralph Marano, Jr.

Rolls Royce elegance with Packard reliability. This is a 1938 Packard Super Eight chassis and front end with a hand made aluminum Rolls-Royce Town Car body on it. The car was built for a wealthy Canadian Harry Hatch as a birthday present for his wife. He wanted to buy her a Rolls-Roye but wasn’t sure about the reliability of the Rolls so he sent a Packard 1605 chassis to England and had Barker of London hand make an aluminum Rolls-Royce body for the chassis. The original purchase price was $20,000. It looks like this car went through 4 owners in Canada up unitl 1966. I would love to know where this car is today if it still survives. Also, in 1966, it was offered for sale in what was described as good condition for $3500. What a buy!
