WARRANTY Wednesday, April 14, 2021 Ashburton Guardian NEWS 3 A Princely tale remembered How a Mid Canty youngster got to meet the Duke By Daryl Holden [email protected] There’s a very good reason why Ashburton’s Robyn Stockdale says she’s been “in awe’’ of the late Prince Philip all of her life. As a nervous but excited seven-year-old in 1977, Stockdale (then Heywood), enjoyed a quick but very personal chat at Caroline Bay in Timaru with the Duke of Edinburgh, who died at Windsor Castle at the age of 99 last Friday. The Duke and the Queen were on a whirl- wind visit in February 1977 as part of a tour of the Commonwealth celebrating Her Maj- esty’s silver jubilee for 25 years on the throne. Stockdale was a member of the Chertsey Brownies and recalled anxiously hoping to see the couple on that hot summer’s day. “I remember we were behind the ropes but I don’t remember how long we were waiting for,’’ Stockdale said. “I do remember that we got told that if the Prince or the Queen talked to us, that we had to be very polite.’’ All the Chertsey Brownies were lined up, standing proudly in their uniforms. Well, all except Stockdale. She couldn’t stand be- cause of a knee injury. That turned out to be the ultimate royal blessing in disguise. “Because I had this bandage on my leg, I couldn’t stand up with the rest of the Brown- ies. I was sitting down on the ground. Prince Philip saw that and he came up to me. He bent down to talk to me.’’ And what did he say? “He asked me how I hurt my leg,’’ Stock- kdale said. “I said I fell over when I was roller-skating. “He said, ‘that’s a dangerous sport to play’.’’ And that was it. Stockdale’s moment with royalty was gone as quickly as it took place. Fleeting though it was, it’s something Stock- dale has never forgotten. The Duke’s death has brought those memories flooding back. “I’ve been in awe of him all of my life be- cause he stopped to talk to me, but I hav- en’t been in awe of the Queen so much.
