OLYMPIA FIELDS COUNTRY CLUB/FIGHTING ILLINI INVITATIONAL Illinois hosted the 11th-annual Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational Sept. 16-18, 2016, at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club north course. Olympia Fields C.C. is home to several premier events, including the 2015 U.S. Amateur. The club has hosted two U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, five Western Opens and a U.S. Senior Open among other high-level tournaments. The Illini welcome nationally ranked competition to the OFCC/Illini Invite year-after-year, and the 2016 event was no different. Illinois welcomed a stacked field of competitors the event including seven teams ranked in the preseason Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. Illinois checked in at No. 3 on the list, and the field also included No. 1 Texas, No. 2 USC, No. 4 State, No. 16 Alabama, No. 18 Florida State, No. 19 Arizona State, No. 24 Baylor, Army, Indiana, UNLV, North Carolina, Northwestern, Purdue and Texas A&M. As a team, the Illini won their third-even OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational title. The Orange and Blue shot 5-over par through three rounds of play, and five Illini placed among the top 25 individuals, including juniors Dylan Meyer and Nick Hardy who tied for second and fourth, respectively. Illinois’ team total of 845 matched the tournament record set by Florida State in 2010; UI is the only team to win the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational more than once in the tournament’s history. Texas A&M’s Cameron Champ won the individual title with a total score 5-under par. Oklahoma State (+18) and Texas A&M (+24) rounded out the top three teams at the tournament. Illinois head coach Mike Small was invited to be an honorary member of the Olympia Fields Country Club in 2007, becoming the first to receive such a membership since 2003, when was honored with the invitation. “The tournament is run as a first-class event by the members here,” Small said. “It means a lot to the University of Illinois to be associated with Olympia Fields, and I know it means a lot to Olympia Fields to put on such a great event.
