Essays on the Persecution of Religious Minorities by David Thomas Smith A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Political Science) in the University of Michigan 2011 Doctoral Committee: Professor William R. Clark, co-chair Professor Anna M. Grzymala-Busse, co-chair Professor Robert J. Franzese, Jr. Professor Andrei S. Markovits Professor Robert W. Mickey i Acknowledgements Throughout the last six and a half years I have benefited enormously from the mentorship and friendship of my wonderful dissertation committee members: Bill Clark, Anna Grzymala-Busse, Andy Markovits, Rob Mickey and Rob Franzese. I assembled this committee before I even knew what I wanted to write about, and I made the right choices—I cannot imagine a more supportive, patient and insightful group of advisers. They gave me badly-needed discipline when I needed it (which was all the time) and oversaw numerous episodes of Schumpeterian “creative destruction.” They also gave me more ideas than I could ever hope to assimilate, ideas which will be providing me with directions for future research for many years to come. But these huge contributions are minor in comparison to the fact that they taught me how to think like a political scientist. I couldn’t ask for anything more. All of these papers had trial runs in various internal workshops and seminars at the University of Michigan, and I profited greatly from the structured feedback that I received from the Michigan political science community, faculty and grad students alike. Thanks to everyone who was a discussant for one of these papers—Zvi Gitelman, Chuck Shipan, Sana Jaffrey, Cassie Grafstrom (twice!), Ron Inglehart, Ken Kollman, Allison Dale, Pam Brandwein, Andrea Jones-Rooy, Rob Salmond and Jenna Bednar.

THE OLD EDITORS. Jpl| EORGE ARDEN, the Co-Proprietor and Editor of the Gazette, was an accomplished and florid writer, not only as a journalist, but as a pamphleteer. The literary power of which he was capable was unballasted by experience, and, there was no mental brake to keep him within bounds. He had for a time the sole newspaper at his command; but he was absorbed by an inordinate self-sufficiency, and lacked perseverance. When newspapers were small, and their success mainly depended on the active personal supervision of the editor, Arden, who understood little of, and cared less for, journalistic minutice, was satisfied when he supplied an elaborate "leader." He was also much given to libelling, and falling into trouble thereby. In 1839, he was convicted and fined; in 1841, he was committed for trial, but the prosecution was abandoned; in 1843, he was again convicted of libel in connection with the first Corporation selections, and his brilliant and splenetic tirades against the first Resident Judge (Willis), though powerful agents in the ultimate un-benching of the official, proved the ruin of the writer.

Henry Faure Walker CEO, Newsquest Media Group Media Masters – June 7, 2018 Listen to the podcast online, visit www.mediamasters.fm Welcome to Media Masters, a series of one to one interviews with people at the top of the media game. Today, I’m joined by Henry Faure Walker, chief executive of Newsquest, one of the UK’s largest publishers of regional news. After serving as managing director at JP Ventures and general manager at The Scotsman, Henry was named digital director of Johnston Press, where he led the group’s successful digital transformation. In 2014, Newsquest appointed him chief executive, citing his appreciation of the group’s print heritage, and his ability to implement strong digital strategies. The company publishes more than 200 titles, and reaches an audience of 28 million every month. Henry, thank you for joining me. Thanks very much. It’s a pleasure to be here. So Henry, let me go on with the most difficult question first, I think, which is that regional news publishers must have it the toughest out of all of the print press that is under pressure at the moment. How can you balance the viability of it as a business, while also being a strong voice for local communities? Look, I think clearly print newspapers are tough, and the woes of the local newspaper industry have been well publicised, and a large part of that has been driven by the dramatic declines in classified advertising, which Rupert Murdoch used to call the ‘rivers of gold’, that to a large degree supported the financial model of local newspapers.

Inspired by the novel, the high energy dance adventure captured the charm and originality of Lewis Carroll’s story. St Mary’s Church was transformed by the Norway based company on Friday (Nov 27) into an intimate and atmospheric performance space, with pews pushed aside and youngster sat just inches from the action. Fast paced choreography, designed to engage, gave the dancers plenty of opportunity to enthral the capacity audience. Panta Rei had earlier in the afternoon, participated in a very successful school’s workshop with children of Great Bedwyn Primary School, during which the dancers commented on ‘the fantastic engagement of the community’. The performance was brought to the village by community members via Rural Arts funding. • 5.0 the Public Consultation Event - November 8Th, 9Th and 10Th 2012
5.0 The Public Consultation Event - November 8th, 9th and 10th 2012 5.1 Context The purpose of the consultation event was to introduce the emerging Masterplan which had to date, evolved following the stakeholder meetings and discussions held with key members of community groups in Chippenham. It was also an opportunity to speak to the public face to face, answering any of their questions. During the event, the team had the opportunity to explain there were certain constraints affecting development of the site. This meant that not everybody’s ideas could physically be incorporated into the plans but there was a real opportunity to create a better environment for existing businesses at Langley Park, tenants of Hathaway Retail Park and the residents of Chippenham. 5.2 Constraints The Masterplan identified the areas for different uses on the site, taking account of constraints such as the position of Invensys’ main operating buildings, points of access, proximity to the railway line, the boundary with adjoining residential properties, topography of the site and costs of demolition and decontamination. 5.3 Advertising of the consultation events 5.3.1 Leaflet drop The consultation was advertised via a leaflet drop to approximately 500 dwellings in the immediately proximity to the site, see Appendix 5 for the leaflet drop area. Flyers (see below) were also sent to over 6,000 homes in Chippenham via the Wiltshire Star on 1st November. 25 5.3.2 Press Advertising A full page advertisement was taken in the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald on Thursday 25th October and on Thursday 1st November and a strip advertisement was taken in the ‘Weekend’ section of the Gazette and Herald on Thursday 8th November.

  • Blackpool's Aerodromes 1928-36: Politics and the Local Media
Blackpool's Aerodromes 1928-36: Politics and the Local Media Susan Seabridge Master of Arts Thesis Degree awarded by the University of Central Lancashire May 2006 Abstract The thesis describes the development of a municipal aerodrome at Stanley Park, Blackpool, between 1928 and 1936, and explores the reasons for the aerodrome's failure to be a profitable enterprise for Blackpool Corporation. It argues that this issue caused a breakdown in the interventionist strategies, described by historians as 'municipal capitalism', that the Corporation had used successfully in the inter-war years in order to provide the resort with modern, but costly, amenities. Evidence provided suggests that the Corporation's overreaching ambition to demonstrate 'airmindedness' was only partly responsible for the aerodrome's failure and that successive governments' air policies gave neither useful guidance to local authorities, nor sufficient funds to support aerodrome initiatives. The thesis also examines the role played by the local newspapers, the Blackpool Evening Gazette and Gazette and Herald, in influencing public opinion on the issue of the aerodrome and finds that, although the newspapers provided a forum for discussion for Blackpool residents and took on the mantle of moral guardians of readers' interests, there is little evidence to show that the newspapers stance on the issue influenced decisions taken by the Corporation. While historians have generally disregarded such newspapers because of their lack of interest and influence in local politics, the wider value to the local community of its locally-owned newspaper is demonstrated, The thesis further investigates the aerodrome's contribution to modernising and changing the established image of Blackpool in this period, and finds that the siting of the aerodrome at Stanley Park, in an area of planned housing and a public park, far from supporting Blackpool's aim of encouraging the middle- classes to visit and make their homes in the town, did, in fact, add to its unpopularity and became one of the reasons for its failure.
