KEVIN BUNDY Nominated for Director by Members (House and Grounds)

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION: I was born Toronto and I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelors of Science in 1976 and a Master's of Science in 1979, specializing in radiation biology. Following graduation I worked as a radiation protection officer at high grade uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan and 6 Novem ber 201 3 Full & By in 1985 moved to Ottawa where I worked for the Atomic Energy Control Board which later became the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission until my recent retirement. Mary, my wife of 34 years, and I have two children, a son, Mark, who is married to a wonderful lady, Jessica, who live with their 2 children in West Virginia. Our daughter, Christine, lives with us in Ottawa and is currently studying business for a career in marketing.

MEMBERSHIP: We joined BYC as Family Members in 2001 and regret not joining sooner.

CLUB ACTIVITIES: It was during our university days that Mary and I were introduced to sailing. Our first boat was a Laser, “Hydrophilly,” which we sailed for 22 years in “cottage country” north of Toronto and in Saskatoon, where we were founding members of the Blackstrap Sailing Club (1981). Our love of sailing was renewed when we purchased our Tanzer 7.5 in 2001, and recently as a cure for "five-footitis" we upgraded to our current boat, a , “Emotional Rescue.” We have cruised up and down the river and I have occasionally raced at BYC since 2001.

PAST BYC INVOLVEMENT: Mary and I volunteer as much as our time allows as we believe it makes for a better club, we meet other members, it's rewarding and it's fun. We have both been involved with the National Capital Regatta over the last 7 years and we try to get to every work party we can. Lately the House and Grounds Committee found I have some basic carpentry skills and so I have been doing some odd jobs and small projects around the grounds. I have served a couple of terms on the Nominations Committee and am a current member of both the House and Grounds and the Harbour Committees.

OTHER ACTIVITIES/ASSOCIATIONS: I am involved in a number of activities outside of sailing including curling in the winter and softball in the summer. I also enjoy woodworking although my production time is sometimes epic. I am an active member in the Canadian Radiation Protection Association and the Health Physics Society.

CLUB COMMITTEE COMMITMENT: I believe that many hands make light of heavy work, that many eyes see more than just one pair and that many minds produce more ideas and solutions than mine alone ever could. In light of this, I look forward to the continuing involvement of a House and Grounds Committee to aid me in the maintenance and improvement of our clubhouse and grounds.

OBJECTIVES AS BOARD MEMBER: I will actively seek out the ways and means to improve our Club to the benefit of all members. To do this, I will talk and listen to the members, bring their comments and issues to the Board and work with the Board to address these issues in the best interest of BYC. I will also actively participate in addressing Club issues brought to the Board as well as working with the Projects Manager, Harbourmaster, Planning Committee and the General Manager to achieve our long term plans and goals.

CLUB COMMITTEE COMMITMENT: Technology is one of the things that you don’t think about, and when it breaks, you don’t have time, nor money to spend on it. The IT committee is all about making sure things keep on working as they are supposed to.

OBJECTIVES AS BOARD MEMBER: To work on ways to continue to make technology work for the Club reliably day-in, day-out.

CLUB COMMITTEE COMMITMENT: Over the past 2 years we have had a Junior Committee, however, meetings have not been as regular as they should have been. This year we will work at having more meetings to strengthen the program.

OBJECTIVES AS BOARD MEMBER: As Youth Director, I would like to work at increasing youth involvement and participation at the Club. I have heard many great ideas from Club members with youth and from the youth themselves. Remembrance Day Ceremony Join us to commemorate the many civilians and military personnel who lost their lives in armed conflicts.

The Act of Remembrance will take place at 11 a.m. sharp at the flagpole with a ceremony and reception to follow.

The poppy as symbol of remembrance comes from the poem written by John McCrae, a Canadian doctor serving in the military. In Flanders Fields describes the poppies growing in the Flemish graveyards where soldiers were buried. Poppies grow well in soil that has been disturbed. They also grew in large numbers on battle fields. The red colour of their petals reminded people of the blood lost by victims and casualties in the conflict. To: Members of Britannia Yacht Club; As many of you know, I recently accepted a position in Victoria, British Columbia. This is a tremendous professional opportunity for both Kathy and I that will most importantly bring us closer to family. The decision had to be acted upon with a very short timeline and we appreciate the warm send off this past Friday evening, especially on such short notice!

Kathy and I have been members of BYC for approximately five years and have immensely enjoyed our “Cottage in the City”. We are both proud to have been members of BYC, having had the opportunity to take part in many of the activities that are offered throughout the year.

WINDSURFING REPORT

from - Kirk Robertson - Protest Chair & Summer has come and gone and once the Chief Handicapper gates came out of the harbour, we had a great one. A few of us participated in three regattas: the Kona Worlds in Trois-Rivières, the Canadian Masters’ Windsurfing Association (CMWA) annual regatta in Toronto and the National Capital Regatta at BYC. I’ve reported on the Kona Worlds in my previous article. The PHRF CMWA regatta was hosted by the Toronto Windsurfing There will be changes to handicaps next year. Sixteen spring. windsurfers came to Ottawa to participate in this annual event. Saturday was pretty windy, with winds between 15-20 knots. shared a house with another crew hailing from Lake 2013 J22 World Championships hosted by George, New York, and thanks to Paula's efforts we Sail Newport Sept. 29 to Oct. 5 always came home to a clean house, a fully stocked fridge and dinner plans already sorted. Did I mention the from - David O’Sulian beer fridge was stocked as well? A big thank you to Paula for easing our stress and helping us to concentrate primarily on sailing and getting faster Next year, knowing what we know now, we'll be that much faster and ready to compete!

Being my first time to Newport to say I was amazed Suzie Q’s First Race is an understatement. Known to most as the sailing capital of the world, it lived up to expectations as we by - Suzanne Roberge drove over the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge and saw all the boats scattered around Narragansett Bay and On September 15 Dave and I did our first long Newport Harbour. I quickly realized we were "no longer distance on our ‘new-to-us’ . The wind was in Kansas" and knew that we would have to be on the south west, which meant we could pretty much do it in a top of our game to even come close to competing with straight line. We did two tacks going up in order to avoid the top boats in the fleet. The international fleet a shoal and that was it. My friend Joan, with whom I’ve consisted of boats from the USA, Canada, Cayman been racing on Phoenix for the past 15 years, came with Islands and the Republic of South Africa. The crew of us. After a misleading 6th place finish in the of all sizes on the line. practice race we felt confident with our boat's setup, however, on the first day of real racing, alongside 70 other boats it became quickly apparent that we were not up to speed with the rest of the fleet and changes were needed. Day 2 after a few tweaks started out rather well as we arrived at the first windward mark in 1st place with 70 others close on our heels!! Just as we were getting confident with ourselves and boat, the wind really decided to blow in typical Newport fashion (except it was sunny) and another learning curve was thrown at us... Can you tell? how to handle the J22 in sustained 25 knot We lost Muskad at the mark rounding because we winds. Apparently max backstay and flog the is did a very poor job of it! But think we caught up with her fast... who knew! a bit. Haven’t checked the results!! Finally after 3 days racing and many hard lessons learned about the J22 we were up to speed with the leading boats, unfortunately for us the event was more than half over. With that said, Michele, Johan, Julia and I set out to finish off the regatta on a high note. On the last race of the regatta everything finally clicked for us and we finished in a respectable 10th place and we had even been as high as 3rd going into the last windward mark but Mother Nature conspired against us as the winds went light.
