29TH October, 2016

The Monopoly Pub run has been running since 2008. The pub run was not held in 2015, but is back with avengence in 2016. It takes into account 26 pubs throughout Sydney. Whilst the route has changed over the years the same format has been used

The Route The route encompasses 26 streets and stations. This attempts to replicate the Monopoly board, leaving out the Electric Company, Water Works etc. The route encompasses pubs from a varied cross section, and unlike in London where it is necessary to use public transport it is possible to walk the entire route in a reasonably quick time (12 hours or so including drinks and food). Previous Sydney runs have taken about 10 hours usually starting with the die hards and peaking at 50+ through the mid section, which makes for a good crowd.

The route for 2016 is: 1 - Maloney's 14 - The Lord Nelson 2 - Scruffy Murphy's 15 - Hero Of Waterloo 3 - 3 Wise Monkey's 16 - The Glenmore 4 - Sanctuary Hotel 17 - The 5 - Hotel Sweeney's 18 - The Mercantile 6 - PJ O’Brien’s 19 - The Observer 7 - The Forbes Hotel 20 - The Orient 8 - Occidental 21 - Fortune Of War 9 - The Wynyard 22 - Ship Inn 10 - The King St Brew house 23 - The Paragon Hotel 11 - Bungalow 8 24 - Grand Hotel 12 - The 25 - Windsor Hotel 13 - The Captain Cook (The Rocks) 26 - The Edinburgh Castle Hotel Map

Starting Off Meet at the McDonalds restaurant at Town Hall Near the cinemas at 10:30 to leave promptly at 10:55am.

Any latecomers can catch up at one of the later pubs. You can get there from Town Hall Station or by bus to the corner of Liverpool and George sts. Anyone coming in by public transport please note that there may be trackworks or delayed buses. See the links below for more information http://www.131500.com.au

The Strategy 26 pubs might seem like a tall order, and it is if you have a pint in each one (trust me). Since we would prefer to finish the whole route rather than pass out halfway through it is advisable to go for a half pint (aka Middy) in each. There's usually at least half an hour to spare at the last pub for more drinking. It's a fun day out whether you're drinking or not. If you are drinking, you can make it a lot easier on yourself by eating at every possible opportunity and by drinking water as the day goes on.

Please drink within your limits. Remember that landlords, bouncers and patrons are not going to be too happy with a huge crowd of loud drunkards turning up for quick half. So it's best to try to keep to a reasonable level of sobriety and volume if you want to finish the crawl. If there are is a large group of you, try to split up into smaller groups near the end and go into different pubs if there's more than one available.

Most importantly, remember to stay safe while doing the crawl. It's easy to think you're invincible when you've had a bit to drink, so be careful of the Sydney roads and follow the Green Cross Code! (see Page 31)

“Stop at the kerb, (Stop at the kerb), Look to the right, (Look to the right), Look to the left, (Look to the left), And look to the right agin. Then when the road is clear of traffic, Walk straight across the road (don’t run) Walk straight across the road” Meeting Point - GO!

It’s a long way to the top at this tiny corner pub, so our advice is to expedite the journey and bypass the bottom floor altogether. It’s just a sports bar, anyway, and things get way more interesting the higher you go. Skip the Thai kitchen and dining area on the second floor too, although the antique stained-glass window depicting a cancan girl flashing her frilly bloomers deserves a squiz to remind you this is one of those rare character-infused Sydney pubs that hasn’t had a tacky facelift in the last 15 years. The third floor, housing little more than a pool table and jukebox, is bare and grungy in a uni common room kind of way, while the rooftop is where you really want to be.

The Grand hotel is another Merivale hotel which is right in the heart of the CBD. On a Saturday it is not very busy except for a few tradies after a cold one. The hotel compromises three floors of accomodation and bars, which include a bistro and a lounge area, a pool room and a function centre. Good cheap food midweeks. Alternatives Royal George Hotel - Is on George st, but can easily cut back to the Angel bar through a back alley (Angel place as it works out). This is where a few people come unstuck as it is quite a walk to the next pub and poeple are starting to get a bit pissy. The best thing to do if you have made it here is to get in and out quick and make it to the last pub. The New Windsor Hotel is a great place to enjoy a relaxing drink where you'll always feel comfortable and never out of place. Plenty of televisions line the walls featuring everything from various sports to current affairs and news. High ceilings and windows let in lots of natural light and add to a bright and breezy atmosphere. And the bar menu is not a bad accompaniment to the beer. This is our final meeting point if you cannot get into any of the pubs before hand try to get in here and wait. They have Kareoke, which has just started again and are renowned for allowing a fair bit of frivolous behaviour occur. The heritage-listed Edinburgh Castle is an inner-city pub filled with old world charm. Local office workers, firemen and backpackers alike are drawn to the pub’s laid back atmosphere, great bistro food and beautiful historic features. Drinkers and diners also enjoy an open sundeck, a hidden gem in the bustle of the CBD. Set over three levels, the current Edinburgh Castle is an intrinsic part of Sydney’s downtown history. Built by the brewers Tooth & Co in the 1930, lovers of art deco will appreciate the pub’s historic features. Alternatives You made it!!!!!
