Words of Wisdom from St. John “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). As Roman Catholics, we believe that much of what Jesus taught and did was witnessed by the Apostles but not necessarily written down. Instead, we believe that the Apostles passed many teachings on to others by their sermons and even informal conversation. A great deal of that information was eventually written and is available to us outside of Holy Scripture. We call that body of teachings “Tradition” and it is as valuable as the Bible. Fundamental Protestants will tell you that all you need to know is in the Bible and everything else is spurious but don’t believe them – how can the teachings of the very witnesses to Christ’s ministry be spurious?
If you haven’t done so already, please return your Rice Bowl – hopefully chock full of money!
We received a letter from Laura Curran, Executive Director of Pregnancy Center East. She thanks us all for our donation of $365 from our second collection in January. She reminds us that the money will help provide diapers, formula, and other essentials to women who most need the help. It will also help them provide free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds. Thank You!!! You have questions; We have answers April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. As we are all painfully aware, child abuse is a monstrous crime that can destroy a child’s future. All employees of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, as well as volunteers who will have contact with children, must undergo FBI background checks. They must also attend regular ongoing training sessions to learn how to spot potential abuses and abusers. Our Archdiocese has many resources to help prevent abuse, to prosecute abusers, and begin healing for abused children. If you or someone you know has been abused at any time by an agent of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati (priest, deacon, employee or volunteer), the Archdiocese urges you to report the abuse to the Coordinator of Ministry to Survivors of Abuse at 513-263-6623 or 1-800-686-2724 ext. 6623 as well as to the secular legal authorities. Have you ever attended an Ordination? Very few experiences are likely to fill you with as much awe and feelings of holiness as an Ordination Mass. There are two Ordination ceremonies coming up: Seven Transitional Deacons (those who will continue on to become priests) will be ordained Saturday, April 25. On May 16, three priests will be ordained. Both events will be at St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral at 11 AM.
On the Second Sunday of Easter of the Jubilee Year 2000, at the Mass for the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska (1905 – 1938), St. John Paul II proclaimed to the world that “from now on throughout the Church this Sunday will be called Divine Mercy Sunday.” On February 22, 1931 (in the midst of the Great Depression and the aftermath of World War I), the Polish Nun Sister Faustina experienced a new and life- changing vision of Christ. She saw him wearing a white robe and raising his right hand in blessing with his left hand resting on his heart from which flowed two rays of light. Jesus told her, “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the prayer, ‘Jesus, I trust in you.’” Our celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday reminds us that God’s mercy and forgiveness is always available to everyone.
