Gerard Ter Borch (Gerard Terburgh or Terburg), says the Younger, born in in 1617 and died in on December 8, 1681, is a Dutch genre and portrait painter, active in Münster and . Gerard Terburgh was born in 1617 in Zwoll. Gerard ter Borch began drawing at the age of eight and was a pupil of his father Gerard ter Borch, known as the "Old Man", a distinguished historical painter, who had visited Rome. Undoubtedly encouraged by Avercamp, after a short stay in Amsterdam (1632), he studied in from 1632 to 1635 at Pieter de Molyn's, where he borrowed the simplicity of compositions at the same time as he appropriated the fine gray harmonies of Frans Hals. He visited London (1635), Germany, France and Italy before settling in Amsterdam where he was perhaps inspired by Rembrandt's works. In 1646 he left for Münster where he painted, in the Peace of Münster, the plenipotentiaries of the Netherlands and Spain. He followed one of them to Madrid, where the king gave him rich presents and where he could study Velazquez, to whom his style owes a great deal. Returning to his family, he married in 1654 with one of his nieces to Deventer, of whom he became burgomaster, and where the townspeople of the city quarreled with the honor of having their portrait painted by him. Ter Borch was the master of Caspar Netscher, and he had an influence on Metsu, Ochtervelt and Vermeer of Delft. Gerard Terburgh died in 1681 in Deventer at the age of 73 years. The Trictrac Players (1640), currently at the Kunsthalle in Bremen, is the best known of his early works which are almost all military scenes in the style of Frans Hals. After his return from

Italy, he changed his style in favor of the more intimate scenes whose characters are the bourgeois among whom he lived. Ter Borch painted portraits with rare elegance; in his interior scenes, he likes to depict opulent homes. He excelled at painting textures such as the grain of a carpet, the brilliance of a silver vase, the transparency of a crystal cut and especially the fabrics, especially velvet and white satin. He also possessed the art of melting the details as a whole. Its color is distinguished by its vigor and the harmony of its light. He is also the one who painted the famous Reading Lesson (1652). He places himself in the lineage of the Dutch masters, choosing as subject the most ordinary characters, the most trivial scenes, while these characters acquire a troubling depth. https://www.anticswiss.com/en/fine-art-antiques/gerard-ter-borch-1617-1681-woman-at-her-hairstyle-8061
