PRIME MINISTER FOR TWO PERIODS BETWEEN 1754 and 1762

Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle signed document dated 29th July 1743 agreeing to compensate William Reed for his expenditure during his service to the crown at Tripoli in Barbary for the year from 10th July 1741 to 1742 & lists six expenses totalling 1000 Spanish dollars equating to £550 sterling. The Duke of Newcastle was a Whig statesman who held office as Prime Minister for two periods between 1754 and 1762. He was a protègè of , the first Prime Minister, serving under him for over 20 years before taking power himself by which time he had served continuously as a Secretary of State for 30 years and was the dominate figure of British foreign policy. We have never before been able to offer his autograph.

George III signed document dated 29th June 1808 granting a Royal Licence for John Fullock to use ten Dutch ships to import goods from Holland to the . In part it reads ‘John Fullock hath humbly represented unto us on behalf of himself and other British merchants that they are desirous of obtaining our Royal License for permitting ten Dutch or other vessels belonging to any neutral or hostile subjects, excluding French, to forward from Antwerp or any there port as place in Holland to any of the ports of our United Kingdom with ten cargoes of such goods as are allowed by our order of the 11th November 1807 to be imported.’ The document is toned in places but nothing more than you would expect for its age. This is a difficult royal signature to find with it being the first one we’ve had to offer for over four years.
