More later Glidden accompanies her two friends - reporters Rolling Blackouts: Dispatches from Turkey founders of the journalistic non-profit The Seattle Globalist - as they research stories on the Iraq War's effect on the Middle East and, specifically, the war's refugees. A much better travelogue through the same regions in the same time-period is "A Stranger to History" by Aatish Taseer. NYT cuts it pretty deep essentially calling it hip and naive, but then recognizes it's worth in the intimate storytelling we don't get in the news: the lives of real people. Also along on the trip is Dan, an American Iraq War veteran who wants to see how the country has changed in the intervening years. The whole book becomes even more meaningful in light of the current civil war in Syria and one can imagine that the huge influx of Iraqi refugees from the wars would have been a significant contributing factor. Glidden accompanies a team of journalists through Syria and Iraq and her muted watercolours record not only the lives of people in war zones but the way the media interacts with them. Especially if you're American, I feel this is an important read. This book is a masterpiece. These are nice people, talking mainly to nice people, getting their stories, people who have been and are deeply affected by the war, of course. Author Sarah Glidden takes her birthright trip to Israel. Her underlying reason for going: to "find out the truth about this whole mess once and for all." Ms. Glidden makes it clear that she feels pretty strongly about the rights of Palestinians, the injustice of the wall, the harshness of Israeli policies. She steels herself against being "brainwashed" (a word she use a few times) by her hosts and guides.But, once there, the author sees the nuances and complications present in all matters. Case in point: her blood starts to boil when she first takes sight of the wall. Far from ignoring it or giving it an impassioned defense, Sarah's guide gives the wall a review from both sides ("My personal opinion is that, while hate how it hurts many people, every day that I wake up and there's no attack on the news, I think about the wall.") Her take: it was "refreshing to hear [him] speak of the negative aspects of the wall without being prompted."     Postcolonial Comics: Representing the Subaltern Dominic Davies Introduction: The Burdens of Representation The front cover of Sarah Glidden’s recent book-length comic, Rolling Blackouts: Dispatches from Turkey, Syria, and Iraq (2016), depicts a scene overlooking a cramped Middle Eastern city. In the foreground, standing on a flat roof in the image’s very center is a man, his eyes concealed by his opaque spectacles. As the comic goes on to reveal, this man, Sam, was once an Iraqi refugee living in the United States until, after being suspected of terrorism (though without convincing evidence), his asylum was revoked, and he was forced to return to his home country. Separated from his family, who remained in America, Sam’s story is one of the many testimonies recorded in Glidden’s comic, as she seeks to educate American readers about the plight of dispossessed and disenfranchised people whose lives are subject to the whimsical policies of governments and the violent ramifications of war. Indeed, the comic seeks to correct the “rolling blackouts” of the mainstream media, representing the personal experiences of those who so often remain nameless, the details of their lives overlooked by the speed of continuous news cycles.     Volume 4 Issue 3 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND December 2017 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 Comics Journalism: Towards A Definition Kenan Koçak Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University Turkey Abstract The origins of comics journalism are in the Glasgow Looking Glass magazine which is also accepted as the first modern comics. Today’s understanding of comics journalism goes back to Joyce Brabner and Lou Ann Merkle who published Real War Stories in late 1980s which coincides with the rise of graphic novels. It was Joe Sacco who popularised the comics journalism genre in the early 1990s with especially his books on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and the Bosnian War. There are undeniable similarities between comics journalism and new journalism of the 1960s and 1970s such as subjective reporting and effort to liken the genre to novel writing. Both comics journalism and new journalism are a kind of literary journalism and have roots in the underground tradition of the 1960s. Like that new journalism grew bigger as being against the Vietnam War, comics journalism has expanded after September 11 attacks. Whereas before 9/11 there were only a few comics journalists, this number has grown more than three times after September 11. The issues covered by comics journalism are mostly shaped by American politics although there are also a number of examples dealing with topics like global warming and protests movements. Comics journalism is the last phase of the long history of visual journalism which can be even traced back to cave paintings. This study aims to make a definition of comics journalism by focusing mainly on war journalism.
