REFLECTIONS Yara Arts Group crosses borders: From Capt. John Smith to Donetsk by Virlana Tkacz This September Yara Arts Group presented “Capt. John Smith Goes to Ukraine,” an original theatre piece featuring Bob Holman, poet and founder of the Bowery Poetry Club, Susan Hwang, New York performance artist and musician, and Julian Kytasty the legendary bandurist, in Lviv and Kyiv. I first had the idea to do this show several years ago when I heard Mr. Kytasty play a duma and Mr. Holman, a great performer, “translate” it. Basically, Mr. Holman impro- vised in English on what he thought the piece Mr. Kytasty was performing might be about – and Mr. Holman does not understand any Ukrainian. Here was a ridiculously radical approach to translation that produced some fabulous poems. I just had to get involved. Messrs. Holman and Kytasty were fun to watch on stage, but I thought the performances would be stronger if they were part of a play, and they portrayed characters. As I lis- tened to this duma sitting in the dark old Bowery Poetry Club, an idea floated into my head – Mr. Holman should play Capt. John Smith.
