RISING STAR Upstairs Circus

by Nicole Urista, CMA

Matt and Kelly Johannsen started UPSTAIRS CIRCUS about four years ago in Denver, Colorado. With two locations in Colorado the couple felt that Minnesota was the next best spot. Kelly was born and raised in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Matt also rooted in the Midwest from Madison, Wisconsin.

The Denver-based company opened its first out of state spot in the Summer of 2017 in the Washington, former Sex World Building in Downtown Minneapolis. Like the wine and painting concepts, Upstairs Circus offers 25+ project options and a full bar of spirits. The projects offered including leatherworking, painting, yarn art and jewelry. Some examples of options are: leather flasks, scarves, necklaces, yarn art, etc., all skill levels and an ever- changing menu of projects. Minneapolis has 10-12 employees, two full time managers and 8-10 part-time staff.

Project Socials are regularly scheduled time in which you gather to make DIY art and crafts with friends. You can book a spot, by purchasing a spot on the calendar page, select a project social date and time and then arrive. Each circus-goer can pick their own project to create from the project menu of 25+ projects. All the supplies, tools and tutorials are provided to create your masterpiece. Work at your own pace, enlist the Upstairs Circus project assistance for advice and project tips. Use your creative juices and enjoy cocktails from the full bar as you create your projects. Enjoy your art work in your home, office, etc.

Upstairs Circus is available for group outings. Host a project social or rent out the entire space. Prices for groups making projects start at normal project social ticket prices of $37 per person. Drink ticket plans also available for groups. The Traveling Circus is also available if you’d like the circus to come to you.
