Meggs came to the UW after having spent the previous three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he Tue., March 8 won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II seven Seattle U. at Washington times and won the league eight times. University of Washington Athletics • Athletic Communications • Graves Hall • Box 354070 • Seattle, WA 98195-4070 NATIONAL RANKINGS WASHINGTON BASEBALL FEBRUARY 23, 2011 Baseball America SERIES HISTORY: Washington has never played Cal State Bakersfield, which only began its baseball Top 25 (Feb. 21, 2010) season in 2009. After this weekend's games, UC Davis will be the only NCAA Division I program in the state 1. Florida 3-0 2. UCLA ★ 3-0 of California that the Huskies have never played. Davis, incidentally, moved to Division I in 2005. 3. Vanderbilt 4-0 4. TCU 2-1 Squad Breakdown: Among the 35 players on the 2011 Husky roster, there are five seniors, five 5. Oklahoma 3-0 juniors, 10 sophomores and 15 true freshmen, meaning that 25 of 35 (71 percent) players are freshmen or 6. Texas 3-1 sophomores. The squad includes 14 returners and 21 newcomers (15 true freshmen, three sophomore transfers 7. South Carolina 3-0 and three junior transfers). Entering the 2011 season, the UW's returning players have competed in a total of 8. Stanford ★ 2-1 9. Arizona State ★ 3-0 735 Husky baseball games. Seven different veteran position players have combined for 1,488 career at bats, 10. Florida State 3-0 which is actually a relatively low number. Six veteran UW pitchers have combined to make 64 career starts 11. Clemson 2-1 and have pitched 606.1 career innings in a Husky uniform. 12. Cal State Fullerton ★ 1-2 13. Virginia 3-0 Another tough Schedule: Each year, Washington boasts one of the toughest schedules 14. Connecticut 1-2 in the season, if only by virtue of playing the rigorous Pac-10 Conference. According to well-regarded college 15. Oregon ★ 1-2 16. Baylor 2-1 baseball website, boydsworld.com, the Huskies have the eighth-toughest schedule in the country, though all 17. California ★ 2-0 of the Pac-10's team rank highly. The Huskies, of course, face the nine other Pac-10 teams. Six Pac-10 teams 18. Arizona ★ 3-0 (Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA) were ranked in either the Baseball America and 19. College of Charleston 3-0 USA Today coaches' preseason polls, or both. Oregon State and Washington State also each also received 20. LSU 3-0 votes in the coaches' poll. Additionally, the Huskies travel to Cal State Fullerton for a three-game series at 21. Texas A&M 3-0 Husky Ballpark. The Titans are ranked in the top 10 in both polls. 22. Rice 1-2 23. St. John’s 2-1 24. North Carolina 4-0 Where Are They From?: Washington's baseball roster has traditionally been heavily dominated 25. Miami (Fla.) 2-1 by in-state players. The 2011 team is much more diverse than what had been the norm for many years as, of the 35 players, nine players completed their high school career in a state other than Washington (generally over USA Today / ESPN Coaches’ Poll the past few decades, that number has averaged closer to two or three out-of-state players). So, 26 Huskies Preseason Top 25 (2010 records) ★ come from in-state while there are six from California and one each from Minnesota, Indiana and Utah. Of 1. UCLA 51-17 the 26 players from the Evergreen State, 25 come from west of the Cascades, (the western half of the state). 2. TCU 54-14 3. Florida 47-17 4.
