British Airways Football Legends Invitational Tournament 2011 Launched British Airways football legends invitational tournament 2011 launched Submitted by: pr-sending-enterprises Tuesday, 25 January 2011 The British Airways Football Legends Invitational Tournament 2011 has been officially launched by the Barbados Tourism Authority. This will excite Brits and Bajans in the run up to a spectacular clash of the Titans. The six-a-side tournament will be held at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, on 10-11 June 2011. Teams representing England’s top clubs will battle for top honours in the inaugural British Airways Football Legends Invitational Tournament, raising money for local charities involved in the development of football in the Caribbean. Chelsea legends such as Roberto Di Matteo, Gianfranco Zola and Gus Poyet will once more take to the field alongside the likes of Manchester United’s Andrew Cole, Steve McManaman and Jason McAteer of Liverpool, Ray Parlour and Paul Merson of Arsenal and Newcastle and England hero Rob Lee. Former Chelsea favourite and current West Brom boss Di Matteo is looking forward to recommencing battle against some of his old adversaries: "The opportunity to renew some old rivalries and to play in such a high profile and prestigious competition was simply too good to refuse. It’s absolutely fantastic to think that we will be lining up with and against some of the great players from our own era and in such a wonderful location as well". Ex-Newcastle and England captain Alan Shearer also anticipates an entertaining few days in the West Indies: "The emphasis on this event will be on exhibition as well as competition and whilst you can never take that competitive edge away from a footballer, the respect and friendship amongst all the lads will no doubt produce some great entertainment for the crowd too." Christian Smith, commercial director of the Professional Football Association explained: "Our aim is to establish an annual series of events featuring some of the great players of the last decade but this is only possible with the help and support of our members and the invaluable contribution of partners like the Barbados Tourism Authority and British Airways." Almond Resorts is the official hotel partner for the football legends tournament. They were emerging as title rivals to Ferguson’s Manchester United and he was keen for Morgan to move to Old Trafford. Morgan chose Blackburn, signing for the Ewood Park side in 1994. A year later, Blackburn won their one and only Premier League title. But despite training with the league-winning squad, and making the bench for league and European matches, Morgan found himself released – and without a club – almost three years later. It was only weeks before captaining the Ireland Under-20s to a third-place finish in the 1997 World Championships in Malaysia. Put simply, Morgan fell by the wayside as Blackburn – and their Premier League rivals – regularly shunned the promotion of youth in favour of big-money signings. The 19 WHERE HAVE ALL THE IRISH GONE? birth of the Premier League in 1992 ushered in an era of stellar signings, compounded by the Bosman ruling in 1995, which removed obstacles to foreign players playing in England – a double whammy which would change the fortunes of Irish players for ever.

  • The Game Changing Twelth Player
Game Changing Fans The 12th Player in every Premier League team in partnership with YouGov 2 | The Game Changing 12th Player Foreword Barclays have been lucky enough to be involved with football for over a hundred years through banking relationships with the FA, many of the clubs, and a long history of partnership with the Premier League – which today sees us as their Official Banking Partner. This longevity has given us the chance to see football from the commercial prospective but also in more recent years from the angle of the fans. The Premier League has captured the imagination of people around the world, those who might initially view football with interest but then, like many, become enamoured with a favourite player, then a team, until the trials and tribulations of being an avid follower dominates their weekends, and they become lifelong fans. Through our partnership with the Premier League we have always tried to celebrate those who support the game. This season we have delved deeper and launched our ‘Game Changing’ campaign that looks to celebrate and recognise those that really do make a difference; players, managers, volunteers and of course fans. This research, commissioned by Barclays and undertaken by YouGov, involves interviews with 4,039 fans from all the Premier League clubs, together with interviews with past Premier League players, broadcasters, academics and fan groups. The aim was to find out what difference fans make to teams; particularly at games but also supporting remotely or through the media (social and traditional). We have asked the question ‘Is there such a thing as the 12th player’ and we think we have gone some way to answering it.
