The four-day conference, which was from 6th to 9th December 2011, was organised by the River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC) of Universiti Sains Malaysia. “Rivers 2011” was organised with the aim to pursue the effect of climate change on finding sustainable solutions for flooding, water scarcity and pollution. In this Rivers 2011, Prof. Dr. Roslan Zainal Abidin, Senior Vice President of KLIUC, was invited to be one of the keynote speakers for the conference. He presented an issue on erosion entitled “River Bank Erosion Risk Pote nt i a l ”. Rivers provide abundant supply of water to cities, some far from its location. Usually rivers as water suppliers have to be dammed and the water spread out downstream. Planners recognise several categories of river water use, namely in stream use, off stream use, consumption use and non consumptive use. A stream’s ability to erode the land and impact humans is closely related to the speed at which the flowing waters move and the amount of water moving through the stream. A fast flowing stream erodes its banks more than a slow moving one.
