GALA Hispanic Theatre presents FAME THE MUSICAL Entertainment 2019-04-22 15:30:16 Washington, D.C. - GALA concludes its 43rd season with the U.S. premiere of a bilingual version of the unforgettable FAME The Musical. Conceived and developed by David De Silva, with book by Cuban writer José Fernández, music by Steve Margoshes and lyrics by Jacques Levy, FAME is directed and choreographed by Luis Salgado. Salgado returns to GALA with the creative team from the theater’s hit production of In The Heights, which garnered nine 2018 Helen Hayes Awards. Foremost in that team is Music Director Walter “Bobby” McCoy, who will lead a nine piece band. The production will be performed in English and Spanish and will have surtitles in both languages. FAME runs May 9 through June 9, 2019 at GALA Theatre, 3333 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20010. Parking is available behind the theatre at the Giant Food garage on Park Road, NW for $4. Press Night is Saturday, May 11, 2019, under the gracious patronage of the His Excellency José Tomás Pérez, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United States. Honoring Luis Salgado, Craig Pascal and Victor Shargai, and Ana Recio Harvey Education 2018-05-02 12:18:09 Washington D.C. – On Monday, May 21, 2018 at 6:30 pm, GALA Hispanic Theatre will host its annual Noche de Estrellas benefit event at the Organization of American States honoring three extraordinary leaders. The 2017 honorees are: Luis Salgado, director of In the Heights en Español, for Artistic Excellence and Inspiration; Craig Pascal and Victor Shargai for Service to the Arts and Philanthropy; and Ana Recio Harvey for Arts and Business. Proceeds from the event will support GALA’s youth education programs, which include the Paso Nuevo program, an arts and academic enrichment program for Latino teens in the District of Columbia that was recognized with a 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Arts Program Award by First Lady Michelle Obama. In addition to the Honoree Awards, Noche de Estrellas will feature performances of Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena by Gabriela Ponce of Repitando; Tango by the Emmanuel Trifilio trio; and music and poems by Paso Nuevo students. Erika González, NBC Channel 4 news anchor, will be Master of Ceremonies; and the guest auctioneer is award-winning actor Lawrence Redmond. Silent and live auctions will offer up exotic get-aways to Mexico, tickets to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton at the Kennedy Center, and more. GALA Hispanic Theatre presents In The Heights Culture 2017-03-30 13:13:21 Washington, DC - GALA concludes its 41rd main stage season with the U.S. premiere in Spanish of the ground-breaking musical In The Heights. Conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, with book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, music and lyrics by Mr. Miranda, In The Heights is directed and choreographed by Luis Salgado. Music Director is Walter “Bobby” McCoy. The production will run April 20 through May 21, 2017 at GALA Theatre, 3333 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20010. Parking is available behind the theatre at the Giant Food garage on Park Road, NW for $4. While there are surtitles for all performances, which are primarily in Spanish, this production integrates some English to better reflect the use of both languages by the characters. Thus, the surtitles will be in English and Spanish, as appropriate. This spirited musical by the creator of Hamilton tells a story of the love, hopes and heartbreaks of a tightly knit multicultural community on the brink of change in New York’s Washington Heights. Teeming with vivid neighborhood characters such as the romantically skittish bodega owner, attractive beautician, wise grandmother, and a young student and her culturally different boyfriend, the stage will sizzle with the urban energy of hip hop, salsa, and merengue. “When I was asked to direct the U.S. premiere in Spanish at GALA by Producing Artistic Director Hugo Medrano,” states director Luis Salgado, “I didn't think twice.
