Penny Press 3-10-5 for Internet.Indd Penny Press Las Vegas, NV Volume 2 Number 23 MARCH 10, 2005 8th Anniversary 9th Anniversary THE PENNY PRESS, MARCH 10, 2005 PAGE 2 LVMS introduces Thursday Night Street Wars By JOHN BISCI Special To The Penny Press The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will intro- duce another program to combat illegal street racing – also referred to as “the illegals” – on March 17. Dubbed “Thursday Night Street Wars,” the new program will go head-to-head with “the illegals” on what has become its busiest night. An illegal street-racing accident took the life of a young motorist two weeks ago and a similar crash last week sent two more to the hospital. “We learned through the grapevine that Thursday is now the big night to congregate for illegal street racing,” said Chris Blair, LVMS senior director of drag racing operations. “Initially, we planned to conduct this new program in the early evening on selected Thursdays, but were afraid we simply might be used as a warm-up ses- sion for the late-night ‘illegals.’ We adjusted the hours to run directly against the illegal street races, thus offer- ing a safe alternative to this dangerous activity.” The Strip’s scheduled Friday night Midnight Mayhems will not be affected. Like Midnight Mayhem, Thursday Night Street Wars will be open to any licensed driver with proof of insurance. All cars and motorcycles must be street legal, driven to the track and pass a safety inspection. As an added incentive, Thursday Night Street Wars will award $100 and a trophy to the drivers turning in the fastest speed and lowest elapsed time (E.T.). “Thursday Night Street Wars hopefully will attract experienced Midnight Mayhem participants and illegal street racers who want an additional challenge,” Blair said. “Racers will compete on a fully-prepped track, just like the NHRA professional drag racers are used to.” Thursday Night Street Wars will be conducted from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Gates will open at 7 p.m. Entry fee is $20 to race. Spectator admission is $5. Alcohol is not allowed at the events. Thursday Night Street Wars will be held on March 17, March 31, May 12, June 9, July 14, August 11 and September 15. More events may be added to the sched- ule to meet demand. DENNY HAMLIN DRIVER, #11 FEDEX CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO SS Birthdate : November 18, 1980 Hometown : Chesterfield, VA Resides : Davidson, NC Height : 6’0” Weight : 170lbs Marital Status : Single Favorite Driver : Bill Elliott Denny Hamlin will take the wheel of the #11 FedEx Chevrolet in 2007 looking to build on an impressive rookie season and once again challenge for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Championship. Hamlin’s rise to NASCAR’s top level has been nothing short of meteoric, considering he was driving Late Model stock cars only three years ago. In 2006, Hamlin burst on the scene with his win at the prestigious Bud Shootout at Daytona, and carried that early momentum into one of the most successful rookie campaigns in NASCAR history. On his way to becoming the first ever rookie to earn a spot in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup, Hamlin posted his first career Nextel Cup win in dominating style at Pocono Raceway. He captured three Bud Pole awards, both Pocono stops and homecoming triumph at Richmond International Raceway. By the time Hamlin sealed the Raybestos Rookie of the Year award, he was challenging for a Nextel Cup championship, ultimately finishing third. Hamlin’s abilities were on display in the Busch Series in 2006 as well. In his second full season, Hamlin recorded two wins, 23 top-ten finishes and seven pole awards. While Hamlin now finds himself racing at the highest level of NASCAR, he has been winning races since the early age of seven when he began his career racing karts in the Junior Sportsman League.
