REBELS IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES There have been 19 former Rebels who have made it to the Major League level, including stars such as Matt Williams and Cecil Fielder. The latest in the Rebel line of MLB players is catcher Toby Hall and outfielder Ryan Ludwick. Ludwick (1997-2000) turned in a career year in 2008, setting personal bests in every offensive category while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. He hit .299, slug- ging 37 home runs and drove in 113 on his way to being named to the All-Star game. Ludwick collected a hit in the Midsummer Classic, which was held in Yankee Stadium. Hall caught for the Rebels in 1997 and signed a minor league contract with Houston this spring but will miss most of 2009 after having shoulder surgery. Former UNLV pitcher Derek Rodriguez (2005) is trying to become the 20th Rebel Ryan Ludwick to reach the show. He was a Rule 5 Draft selection by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and the right-hander reported to spring training looking to secure a bullpen role for the defending A.L. champs.
