INVITATION TO THE FEAST

TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus’ name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God’s feast for all peoples. We don’t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers’ direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yo urself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself—take a wafer and dip it in the juice—in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our “Music during Communion”. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation.

7 6 WORSHIP NOTES STAFF* This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. Rev. Dr. Neil G. Thomas Senior Pastor [email protected] Rev. Andria Davis Angels We Have Heard on High Associate Pastor [email protected] Les Anges dan nos Compagnes is a French carol dating from the 1700s. The English version we sing, Angels We Have Heard on High, was published in 1862. This beautiful hymn pairs verses by unknown Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz French poets with the song of the angels, Gloria in excelsis Deo, the Latin version of the angelic anthem Associate Pastor taken from Luke 2:14, “Glory to God in the highest!” It’s easy to imagine that this was the song sung by [email protected] the angels to the lowly shepherds on the night that Christ was born. The musical refrain stretches out and Rev. Erin Wyma emphasizes the words in a way that is uniquely fun to sing and deeply stirring, as we join with the angels Associate Pastor to proclaim: Jesus has come! Hope has arrived on earth! A Savior is born! Glory to God in the highest! [email protected] Sean Baugh Assoc. Dir. of Music & Worship The Annunciation [email protected] Jerry Calumn-Leavitt Telling the story of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, this beautiful choral piece by Tom Fettke Interim Development Director incorporates the famous “Gabriel’s Oboe” theme by Ennio Morricone. The lyrics quote “Love Came [email protected] Down at Christmas” by Christina Rossetti, as well as sharing the Annunciation account found in the first chapter of Luke. The piece ends with the opening words of Mary’s response, The Magnificat, “My soul Scott Cannon magnifies the Lord…” Chief Accountant [email protected] Chris Jacobson-Chism Assist. Director of Love Has Come Music & Worship Our Recessional Hymn for this Fourth Sunday in Advent—Love Sunday—is Love Has Come! [email protected] Contemporary church musician and composer Ken Bible wrote these lyrics based on the Christmas stories Hardy Haberman in Matthew and Luke, to be sung to the French carol melody, BRING A TORCH. Bible worked at Lillenas Digital Experience Manager Publishing Company for 30 years, serving as director from 1977-1990. He has written over 15 books and [email protected] has original hymns included in nine major hymnals. Anita L. Haddy Director of Ministry & Volunteer Development [email protected] Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy Jess C. McDowell Ancient practice to be used on Christmas Eve, December 24, 11 p.m. and Sunday, January 5, at 11 a.m. Director of Media [email protected] At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, Alan Miles whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that Minister for Youth & Young Adults worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste [email protected] and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. David Moldenhauer Director of Music & Worship Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus [email protected] 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, “From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered Dan Peeler to my name.” God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God’s name. Minister for Children & Families [email protected] In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord Scott Stout appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, Assist. to the Sr. Pastor/Office Mgr. “which are the prayers of the saints” (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the [email protected] Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. Lynn Taylor So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let Director of Facilities it enhance your experience of worship! [email protected]
