Danny Miles Value Point System(This is the formula he uses for men’s college teams) Points + Rebounds + 2x(Assists) + 2x(Recoveries) DIVIDED BY 2x(Field Goals Missed) + Free Throws Missed + 2x(Fouls) + 2x(Turnovers *Recoveries include Steals, Blocks, and Charges Taken. Players are awarded one-and-a- half points (1.5) per charge taken. So, two charges would equal 3 points. The formula listed above is as follows: -the top number is the numerator of a fraction -the bottom number will be the denominator of the fraction Divide the top number by the bottom number to calculate the Value Points. WHAT DOES THE NUMBER MEAN? Below is the performance scale. EXCELLENT = 1.75+ VERY GOOD = 1.50-1.74 GOOD = 1.25-1.49 FAIR = 1.00 = 1.24 POOR = under 1.00 Players should aim for 1.25 and above. He does have an adjusted scale for Women’s Teams and all High School Basketball. He feels you should adjust the scale .20 to .25. Use same formula as one at top of this page. EXCELLENT = 1.50+ VERY GOOD = 1.25-1.49 GOOD = 1.00-1.24 FAIR = 0.75-0.99 POOR = under 0.75 His dvd and 46 page booklet(comes with the dvd) go into detail on: 1. how to implement the point value system 2. Teach your players the formula 3. How to use it as a coach to help decide playing time. He also lists Career Value Points for NBA players (through 2009). Kind of fun to look at. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to signiﬁcant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we ﬁnd that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

A Game Theoretic Approach to Modelling Basketball Darshan Chakrabarti and Rishav Dutta (darshanc and rishavd) 1 Overview Each of the 30 teams in the NBA play 82 games a season (and then top teams participate in the playoffs which progress towards the championship). Typically, coaches and other team personnel analyze tapes of past games and statistics to try to understand deﬁciencies that a team has and understand vunerable points of the other team. We want to make suggestions for strategies for teams to adopt that can be backed quantitatively, so that teams can try to achieve the optimal outcome. 2 Problem Statement Given the current game state, what is the optimal strategy for the offensive team and the defensive team to adopt. For example, consider a matchup between the Houston Rockets and the Golden State Warriors with their starting line-ups on the court: James Harden, Chris Paul, Nene, P.J. Tucker, Clint Capela for the Rockets and Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and DeMarcus Cousins for the Warriors, and James Harden has the ball. What is the optimal strategy for the Rockets? Potential options could be to pass to Chris Paul for a three pointer or Harden could just shoot himself. In order to minimize the potential outcome, the Warriors may choose to assign their best defender to the player most likely to shoot from the Rockets (Klay Thompson on Chris Paul) or they could play aggressive defense on James Harden to prevent him from passing or shooting. Finding the optimal strategy may allow teams to perform better during games.

In 1970, the Charter Class of 18 honorees was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Since then, a select number of administrators, coaches, players and prominent contributors to athletics in Utah have been inducted annually into the Hall of Fame. A beautifully-crafted plaque of recognition honoring each inductee is displayed in special display cases in the main concourse of the Energy Solutions Arena. The old Stephen F. Austin Hotel, where I stayed for the first five years at the tournament was remodeled and renamed. The cost became outrageous there, so we no longer enjoyed staying downtown. Today the Hotel is called InterContinental Stephen F. Austin. Visiting Sixth street became popular and I continued to eat at the Waterloo Ice House. The main attraction in those days was playing at Gregory Gym on the campus of U.T. We always had great pickup games at the student activity center, located right next to Gregory. Jogging was also another passion of mine. Town Lake provided great running trails just south of downtown Austin. Coaching clinics became the norm, as I continued to learn the game. Great times. The person who had the greatest impact on my life was my brother-in-law. This book is dedicated to him. At the age of 10, he began coming over to the house dating my older sister. He was like a family member. For the next twenty years he influenced all aspects of my life.
