Camping on the land where the Town Hall now stands they held clambakes and barbecued the wild boars that roamed the forests. The first Europeans to view our cape were the Norsemen. It is believed that Thorvald, the Viking, landed on Race Point in 1004 A.D. The Old Icelandic Sagas tell of “Keel Cape” and since Cape Cod is admittedly shaped like a keel, it may well have been our long and narrow land of which the troubadors sang. The name “Cape Cod,” however, was given to us by Barthlomew Gosnold who landed near Provincetown in 1602, where, as he wrote “we took a great stoare of codfish.” Henry Hudson came by in 1609 and in 1614 Captain Smith sailed up from Jamestown and mapped the whole coastline. But, the first really great event of Provincetown’s history was the coming of the Pilgrims.
