My Feelings on a Belt Test! Okazaki Shiai in NJ By Eliana G., 4b-kyu (Purple Belt) Five Kaze students partici- pated in a mock tournament When I took my first kyu (belt) test I was afraid, nervous, sponsored by the Okazaki but felt I was prepared. They are feelings that I had when I tested Karate Academy in Palmyra, from my first belt to my last. They are feelings that stick with NJ in March. me through my life for many things.

I was afraid because when I think deep about the test I'm afraid I might not pass. If I don't pass I wouldn't get the next belt. Even if I get a half kyu up I'm still afraid I might go up another half kyu when I take my next test and stay at the same belt. I would think in my head, what if I don't pass, what will I do? But I would have to not think about that and not be afraid when I take the test.

I was mostly nervous. I was nervous because when I got up to do my kata I was a little shaky. It was like getting up on stage to dance, completely nerve racking. I was also nervous because I am very shy and when I'm being watched I feel really nervous. I'm nervous for many things but I'm especially nervous when I take a test. Rayan preparing to begin . I am always prepared when I take a test. If I'm going to take a test I make sure I'm prepared. If I'm not prepared while I test I will probably go up a half kyu or not pass at all. When I feel I am prepared it helps with making me feel less nervous and afraid. I always practice before a test so I feel more comfortable.

Those are my feelings when I take a test for my belt. Afraid, ner- vous, and feeling I'm prepared. My first belt, to my last belt, I always feel these feelings. www.kazekarate.org Page 3 KAZE SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB SUMMER 2014 International Master Camp! Every year, the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) sponsors a master camp and international goodwill tournament right in our own backyard. This year was no exception as the ISKF welcomed more than 400 students from around the world to the 48th camp for a week of training with some of the world’s best Karate instructors, including the ISKF chief instructor, Master Teruyuki Okazaki. Master Camp, and the two-day Fall Camp in September, are held at Camp Green Lane about an hour away from Philadelphia off the Northeast extension of the PA Turnpike. The week is filled with training for all experience levels, lectures, swimming, and some pretty good camp food.

It’s not too early to start thinking about and planning for next year’s camp to be held in early June. Although many partic- ipants train the entire week, you can also attend camp start- ing late Friday afternoon through Saturday and Sunday. It’s an incredible experience to have the opportunity to learn from some of the most influential masters around the globe - and the best part is that they come to us.
