GOLDFIELDS CAVALCADE

“In the town of Roxburgh there are more imposing buildings than are usually found in the small goldmining towns of the colony. The Presbyterian, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Wesleyan denominations have erected places of worship within the borough, and the Government buildings consist of a post and telegraph office, public school, and magistrate's court. The Bank of has erected a handsome branch office here; and four hotels, and a number of up-to-date stores stand in the business portion of the town, which is surrounded by a number of pretty villa residences. A large recreation reserve is used for athletic sports. Football, cricket, tennis, and golf clubs, in addition to a brass band, are among the social attractions of the place, and on the east side of the river the local jockey club has a racecourse.”

This year our trail will make its way through remote country, which represents back country at its very best.

Tuesday 16th February 2016. A safe parking area is available for those wishing to leave their cars at Roxburgh. A bus will leave Roxburgh Race Course on Tuesday afternoon and take you to our starting woolshed near the Styx (Maniototo) where our trail begins.

Your 4-day walking trail is going to lead you from the Styx area and basically follow the Old Dunstan Road to the 1863 gold discovery area of Serpentine. We will make our way onto the remote Lake Onslow, through a landscape of rock tors, tussock and speargrass.

From there we encounter the Knobby Range, and make our way down to our base in East Roxburgh. This treeless landscape will give you magnificent views of country, little changed since goldminers travelled it over 150 years ago.

Our trail as always is about the country side and our walkers, it will be a fun trip through an amazing landscape with a group of wonderful people.

A high standard of tramping fitness is required, as most days involve 6-7 hours tramping over varied terrain. Our backup team will transport your gear, but walkers will need to carry a daypack containing personal effects. Caterers will provide our meals and accommodation, will be in woolsheds, and for two nights we will use a Marquee.

This is a non smoking trail.

So ! Register, get yourself fit and come and join us. We look forward to your company.

Saturday 13th February 2016. We will be meeting in the Poolburn Valley staying at the same camp for three nights and two days, before heading over the Raggedy Range into Galloway. Tuesday 16th. We head up into Little Valley where we will camp for the night, then head up over the Knobby Range camping on the Roxburgh side for 2 nights, we have included a lay day ( just in case & have booked a band for one of these nights), before we head down to the finale.

Due to the distance between a couple of our camps we have approached a local group to shift those that don't have backup drivers (2 shifts, there is a charge for this), the rest we can do ourselves.

This trail is for those that like a nice relaxed ride with shorter days (when possible) and are prepared for a bit of stop/starting, as we like to remind everyone, this is a trail designed for and catering to the heavy wagons first and foremost. This wagon trail is self-catering and does not use woolsheds so for those that haven't been before you will need tents or horse floats for sleeping and camp cooking equipment, electric fencing gear, own horse feed, covers etc. A more detailed list of must haves will be sent out closer to time.
