Coronation Street Tyrone & Kirk FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 16, 2013 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS CORONATION STREET’S TYRONE & KIRK: CAUSIN’ A STIR FRIDAY • JUNE 20 Richmond, BC – Get ready Coronation Street fans … Tyrone & Kirk are coming to River Rock! Portrayed by actors Alan Halsall and Andy Whyment, their characters have become classic while their antics – on- and-off camera – now legendary. Earlier this year, Alan – who has been playing the happy-go-lucky “Tyrone Dobbs” since 1998 – won a National Television Award for “Best Dramatic Male Performance”. Andy – who joined the cast in 2000 – has been honoured with a British Soap Award for “Best Comedy Performance” for his portrayal of the clueless “Kirk Sutherland”. Coronation Street – which centers around the domestic lives of the working class who reside in the fictional town of Weatherfield – premiered in the UK on ITV Granada Television in 1960 and was soon syndicated on other ITV franchises. By the late 60’s, the series began airing internationally in Australia and New Zealand as well as in Canada on CBC Television. In 2010, the series became the world’s longest-running television soap opera in production when CBS’s As the World Turns was cancelled in the United States. In a lively and interactive format, Alan and Andy will share behind-the-scenes stories on Corrie’s cobbles followed by a Q&A session with the audience. Whether you’re a casual viewer or a lifelong fan, this is one show to mark on your calendar. • Smoking, Alcohol and Drugs on Television
Smoking, alcohol and drugs on television A content analysis Conducted by Dr Guy Cumberbatch and Sally Gauntlett on behalf of Ofcom September 2005 Contents Section Page 1 Introduction 1 2 Summary of the Key Research Findings 3 3 Sample Details and Coding Frame 5 4 Overall Frequencies 7 5 Alcohol 10 6 Smoking 14 7 Drugs 16 8 Smokers, Drinkers and Drug Users 18 9 Appendix 1 22 10 Appendix 2 29 Broadcasting Code: Smoking, alcohol and drugs on television Section 1 Introduction Section 319 (1) of the Communications Act 2003 (“The Act”) requires Ofcom to set a Code which contains standards for the content of television and radio services. The Ofcom Broadcasting Code, published on 25 May 2005, took effect on 25 July 20051. The Code, with certain exceptions in the case of the BBC (Sections Five, Six, Nine and Ten) and S4C (part of Section Six), applies to all broadcasters regulated by Ofcom. This independent research was commissioned by Ofcom from The Communications Research Group to assist in the consideration of points raised by the public consultation on the Ofcom Broadcasting Code which began in July 2004. The Act requires that those under eighteen should be protected and Section One of the Broadcasting Code concerns the protection of the under-eighteens. It contains a rule regarding drugs, smoking, solvent abuse and alcohol abuse. We were aware that there was no recent content analysis on this subject. We thought it would be appropriate, in the light of lack of information and the clear public policy steer on smoking in the Government white paper on health, to see if smoking featured in programmes popular with 10-15 year olds and if so, how it was treated.
