Construction of railway line Vahdat – Karamik (Kyrgyzstan border)

Preliminary expert estimation executed on the basis of available design and topographic materials and results of aerial and visual survey of the route. The construction of new railway line, connecting Republic of Tajikistan with China, is possible to implement at the direction of Yangibazar station/ Ilyak –Fayzabad – – Nurabad – Tajikabad – Jirgatal stations – border of Kyrgyzstan – Sari-Tash – Irketash and further, on the direction of Kashgar (PRC). Proposed railway related with designed railway construction, connecting Republic of Kyrgyzstan with China on the direction of Jalal- Abad- Osh – Sari-Tash – Irkeshtam – border with PRC. The length of railway line at the territory of Tajikistan on proposed route makes approximately 296 km. Ilyak station adopted as beginning of the route. Further route runs across the valleys of Ilyak and Obigarm Rivers in the direction of existing road through a lot of settlements. This section is characterized with mountainous, not too much rugged area with absolute height from 850 up to 1900 meters above sea level. There are many lateral streams, taking away mud streams. Mountainsides of separate sections (Dubeda district – Subulak) are prone to landslide phenomena.

The section from Obi Garm to Nurabad is more difficult both in relief and in geological and hydro-geological conditions. On this section proposed route passes on the direction of motor road that will be relocated from HPP flooding zone, crossing many streams, torrential watercourses, mountain ranges on which there will be needed to construct bridges, viaducts, flyovers, tunnels and other engineering structures.

The section from Nurabad to Tajikabad passes through the Valley of Surkhob River. This section is characterizes with not difficult terrain relief and will not make special difficulties in railroad construction, except of sections prone to landslide formation; located on debris cone of mudflow masses where will be necessary to construct drainage facilities, flyovers, bridges and retaining walls. The route of railway runs across developed lands, occupied by tillage and orchards, populated places. The section from Tajikabad to Jirgital and further to the border with Republic of Kyrgyzstan located in mountainous area with significant level differences. The territory occupies the ridges of Altai Mountains, Surkhob river passes in narrow canyon with rocky shores, at separate section found landslide and avalanching phenomenon, caused of availability of spring brook, unfavorable geological and hydrologic condition. Generally, the proposed route of railway line, on the territory of Tajikistan, passes through difficult mountainous conditions, abounding with a great number of crossed streams, torrential watercourses, mountain ranges and passing sections. For ensuring of standard and regulatory requirements during the construction of road (maximum acceptable longitudinal slopes and minimum radius of curves in the plan), a large volume of earthworks, including blast-hole drilling, construction of not less than 20 big bridges with the length of more than 100 meters across Surkhob river and lateral streams, a large number of flyovers and viaducts, pipe culverts, retaining walls and other engineering structures would be necessary. Crossing of mountainous passing sections will require the construction of not less than 8 tunnels with the total approximate length of 16 km. The proposed route of railway line passes to the south in 50 km from unique Nazaraylok coal deposit, whose reserves are large. In addition, the coal of this deposit in its quality is refer to high-calorie sorts of coking coals. In case of the construction of approach road with the length of 50 km up to coalfield, there will appear possibility to export coal by railway not only to regions of the Republic of Tajikistan, but also to neighboring countries. On the base of coal deposit it is possible to construct heat power plant and factories for reprocessing of coal into liquid fuel. The railway line on the territory of Kyrgyzstan will pass in the direction of: border of Tajikistan – Saratish at Altay valley and further run across Irkeshtam in the direction to the border of China.

Expert estimation of the construction will approximately make 3,2 milliard USD

For final definition of the alignment of railway route, more precise definition of the volume of works and construction cost it is necessary to work out Feasibility Study with obligatory implementing of the complex of land surveying, geological and hydrological works.
