season outlook Looking to build off of last season’s trip to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the Oberlin College men’s basketball team is developing a culture of respect under third-year head coach Isaiah Cavaco. Tasting postseason play for the first time in seven years has made the Yeomen hungry and with a perfect blend of veteran leadership and youth, Oberlin will factor into the NCAC race this season. Senior Mike Loll leads the offensive attack as he paced the team in scoring (14.5 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg) and COACHING STAFF assists (2.46 apg) during the 2007-08 season. The second-team All-NCAC selection surpassed the 1,000-point plateau

and raised his level play in conference action, averaging 17.7 ppg in league games. Fellow senior Omari Hall is another premier scoring threat who came into his own towards the end of last season, scoring in double figures in five of the final nine games. The 6-foot-1 guard is one of the team’s top perimeter threats as he connected on a team-best 40.7 percent (33-of-81) of his attempts as a junior. OC welcomes back the return of local

PREVIEW product Jordan Beard who missed the final nine games of the 2007-08 season due to injury. Through his 17 games of

work, Beard averaged 12.6 ppg and was atop the NCAC stat sheet with an 87.8 percent success rate at the free throw line. Beard’s return helps solidify the guard spot and gives the Yeomen one of the better backcourts in the conference. Senior Colin Sallee will also provide sound leadership and depth to the club. After taking last season off, Dylan Venable returns to the Yeomen. During the 2005-06 season he played in 24 games, making 10 starts and finished third on the team with 60 rebounds. QUICK FACTS

the heisman club John William Heisman (1869-1936) was the first professional coach at Oberlin College. In 1892, he led the football team to a perfect RECORD BOOK 7-0 record. In those days of high-powered football, the 1892 Oberlin grid squad defeated both Ohio State and Michigan and was ranked with Minnesota and Purdue as one of the three best teams west of the Allegheny Mountains. Nearly a century later, Oberlin alumni, parents, and other friends honored Heisman’s memory by forming the John W. Heisman Club. Created in 1978, its objective is to strengthen the entire intercollegiate athletics program. Almost one-quarter of a million dollars was raised over three years, with the initial emphasis directed at stabilizing the football program. In addition, funding necessary to support two coaching positions was provided, one for women’s and one for men’s intercollegiate sports. These positions have continued since 1981 with general college funding.

For their efforts, the club members receive first-hand information from the College’s athletics community. Members also enjoy OBERLIN EXPERIENCE use of college athletics facilities during regular hours and free access to all Oberlin-sponsored athletics contests held on campus. Most importantly, they have the satisfaction of knowing they are the key supporters of Oberlin College athletics. In 1985, Heisman Club members voted to transfer responsibility for the club and its activities from the Development Office to the Athletics and Physical Education Department, shifting its focus from pure fundraising to a wider range of services. The Heisman Club is a permanent organization of alumni and friends interested in supporting athletics in the Oberlin tradition. The current structure includes a managing board of eight members elected (for rotating terms) by the membership. The club operates with four standing committees including Admissions Support, Development and Special Projects, Honors and History, and Communications. Each committee serves a specific purpose within the club’s desire to support the entire intercollegiate athletics program. The chairperson of each committee recruits members-at-large to assist the club in its various efforts.

As one of the nation’s most exciting young athletic directors, Joe Karlgaard leads the resurgence of athletics and wellness at Oberlin College. Karlgaard, in his fourth year as the Delta Lodge Director of Athletics and Physical Education, has spearheaded Oberlin’s transformation of varsity athletics, ushered in a campus- wide campaign for wellness, and helped restructure support for club sports. Since becoming the interim director of athletics in OBERLIN EXPERIENCE August 2005, Karlgaard has led an unparalleled rise in varsity sports. Oberlin has improved its North Coast Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy point total each of the last three years, including record totals in 2007 and 2008. Three Oberlin coaches have been named NCAC Coach of the Year under Karlgaard’s direction (Deb Ranieri – field hockey; Blake New – men’s soccer; Ray Appenheimer – women’s cross country), while 8 of 22 varsity programs have achieved their highest conference placement in NCAC history. Five Oberlin athletes have won conference player of the year honors,

RECORD BOOK and more than 200 have been named to all-conference teams. In addition to guiding Oberlin’s competitive improvements, Karlgaard has led the enhancement of athletics facilities and improved the department’s financial status since 2005. Oberlin has invested $5 million in athletic facilities improvements over the last three years, with most of the funding provided through private gifts. Kahn Track and Shults Field, a $3 million stadium for track and field, soccer, and lacrosse, is the crown jewel of the college’s outdoor facilities. The Don Hunsinger Tennis Courts, constructed in 2007, will play host to the 2010 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships. Karlgaard has effectively reached out to Oberlin’s alumni base REVIEW as athletic director by raising nearly $500,000 through the Heisman Club and ushering in several major gifts for facility improvements. Karlgaard turned his attention to campus-wide health issues in 2008. Partnering with the Division of Student Life and under sponsorship from the Office of the President, Oberlin hosted a two-week initiative to engage faculty, staff, and students in the pursuit of health and wellness. The high turnout on campus will ensure continued focus on fostering a culture of wellness at Oberlin in years to come. Club sports have thrived through the partnership of athletics and student life. Karlgaard helped lead a 2008 task force charged with restructuring support for club sports. With a focus on safety, Karlgaard and Dean Linda Gates promoted access to qualified PROFILES medical personnel and safe modes of transportation for these student-run teams. Oberlin now boasts one of the most robust and supported club sports programs among American liberal arts institutions. Prior to becoming Oberlin’s director of athletics and physical education, Karlgaard served as the assistant athletic director for external affairs during the 2004-05 academic year. In just one year, he tripled the number of active donors to the Heisman Club and redesigned the athletic department’s publications. A 1996 graduate of Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in history, Karlgaard was a four-year letter winner in track and field for the Cardinal. He returned to Stanford in 1998 as an assistant to Vin Lananna, his former coach. While on staff, Karlgaard helped guide the men’s track and field squad to the NCAA Division I outdoor title, its first since 1934. Karlgaard left Stanford in 2000 to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Minnesota, where he also served as an

COACHING STAFF assistant coach of men’s cross country and track and field. In 2003, his final year in coaching, Minnesota won the Big Ten outdoor championship with the highest team score in conference history – 168.5 points. Karlgaard received his Ph.D. in educational policy and administration in 2005. Karlgaard lives in Oberlin with his wife Jill, son Charlie (1), and dog Mickey. PREVIEW

2008-09_M_Bball_Media_Guide.indd 34 10/31/08 11:31:59 AM THE OBERLIN EXPERIENCE QUICK FACTS ABOUT OBERLIN COLLEGE Ranked consistently among the nation’s top liberal arts schools, Oberlin College is committed to rigorous academics, artistic and musical excellence, and social justice. Founded in 1833, Oberlin was the first institution of higher education in America to adopt a policy to admit students of color (1835) and the first college to award bachelor’s degrees to women (1841) in a coeducational program. Oberlin’s distinct history of challenging intellectual and social conventions shapes the student experience today, which fosters strong bonds among a diverse community of bright and talented students from around the world. PREVIEW OBERLIN’S DISTINGUISHED 175-YEAR HISTORY The roots of Oberlin College reach back to 1833 when two young Yankee missionaries arrived at a stump-dotted clearing in the forests of northeast Ohio. The Rev. John J. Shipherd and Philo P. Stewart, inspired by Alsatian pastor John Frederick Oberlin, resolved to found a college and colony on the western frontier “where they would train teachers and other Christian leaders for the boundless most desolate fields in the West.” They shortly gained the support of , one of the 19th century’s great revivalists. Finney’s COACHING STAFF reputation attracted students to the college and colony, “bound together by a solemn covenant which pledged them to the plainest living and highest thinking,” as well as financial support for the College and the town of Oberlin. In the spring of 1833, the first settler, Peter Pindar Pease, built his log house at the center of Oberlin. That December, 29 men and 15 women students began classes in the Oberlin Collegiate Institute. Two years later circulars describing Oberlin noted, “Youths are received as members, irrespective of color.” As a result, by the turn of the century one-third of all African American graduates of predominantly white institutions in the United States had graduated from Oberlin. In 1837 four young women matriculated for the regular college course. Three of the four graduated in 1841 and became the first

women in America to receive A.B. degrees. In 1850, by an act of the Ohio legislature, the Oberlin Collegiate Institute became Oberlin PROFILES College. The change was in name only since collegiate instruction had been offered from 1834 when the original charter was granted. The music division became part of the College in 1867, two years after its founding as a private school. The Graduate School of Theology, organized in 1835 as the theological division, was merged with the Divinity School of Vanderbilt University in 1966. Present- day Oberlin College reflects its early dedication to high intellectual standards, liberal education, excellence in teaching, and social and moral commitment. The town of Oberlin, Ohio (population 8,600), is 35 miles southwest of Cleveland and is easily accessible by car, plane, bus,

or train. REVIEW RECORD BOOK OBERLIN EXPERIENCE
