jazzweek.com • March 19, 2007 JazzWeek 7 Artist Q&A: Kurt Elling

n the verge of releasing Nightmoves, his first album for Concord, Kurt Elling is back in the spotlight. He’s up Oto his same old tricks of imaginatively recasting tunes, picking a few classics and finding a few new ones. As with his gigs, time talking to Kurt Elling is time well spent. We caught up with Mr. Elling in between sold-out shows of a run at Yo- shi’s to see what’s going on. – Tad Hendrickson Christian Lantry JazzWeek: So how are you feeling about the new re- cord? Kurt Elling: I’m really happy with it. Nothing ever matches up to one’s expectations, but that’s life. I’ve recalibrated the idea of a perfect album because I’m a jazz musician. Since you’re always experimenting, then it is a more or less successful experiment and that’s okay. I’m not going to beat myself up over it. What about older stuff? On the rare occasion when I listen back to older re- cords I can hear stuff that I was happy with then, but wouldn’t be happy with now. And I definitely hear ways in which I’ve grown. I just know more than I knew then. My goal is to make stuff as good as I can now with the idea that I may listen back in 10 years and say, “That has some nice parts, and this worked,” but I’m glad that I know so much more now. I’m hard enough on myself in other ways that I can’t beat my- self up about a record. What do you mean? I’m hard myself artistically. I’m hard on myself with the live thing. I’m always trying to figure out the thing that an audience needs on a given night from me. Something that suspends their self-awareness on a given night so that they can be as happy as ➤ jazzweek.com • March 19, 2007 JazzWeek 8 they can be. So they’ll be honest with themselves and moved and educated in different ways. So what happens if something doesn’t go quite right? There are nights when I go back to the hotel and say to myself, “That didn’t go.” Even when people seem real happy about it, I might know that there could have been a better way. Then I have to say, “I’ll just have to try again tomorrow night.” I think of your work as a nice balance between cerebral jazz geekdom and the jazz as entertainment tradition. Would you agree? I want to challenge their intellect but I want to keep them involved, so balance is a very heavy thing for me. Sometimes we’ll do a semi-free exploration of “Dolo- res” and I better do something like “Stair- way To The Stars” afterwards. I find if I pace things the right way and put the songs in the right order, and there are many different right orders, everything will be fine. If I can get someone who may not even like scatting, or they got dragged by a girlfriend to the show, to forget about all that as we’re playing then it worked. They may be super turned on by it even though it might the most out experimental stuff they have ever heard. I think that is a good thing, both for a guy like me trying to build an audience and also for jazz in general. Plus, they may have a really good conversation at the end of the night. You’ve added new lyrics to some great songs over the years. What makes the light bulb above your head go off and make you want to do a song? I like a lot more music than I have time to write lyrics to. The love definite- ly comes first, but there are so many cuts that are either above my ability as a writer right now or beyond anyone’s ability or my imagination. To make it come across and make sense – it can be impossible to sing some things that certain tenor saxophonists have done. Like Trane with the sheets of sound – it’s not technically feasible to sing it and it’s not a good idea to write lyrics to certain things. Well I thought you did amazing job with [Coltrane’s] “Resolution.” ➤ jazzweek.com • March 19, 2007 JazzWeek 9 Thank you. It takes a lot of work. And, honestly, I envisioned that as feasible when I listened to it. Everything he plays on it is completely comprehensible, I guess that’s the right word. To answer your question, I’m really led by instinct and I’m just pulled towards certain compositions. And much to the chagrin of my publishing lawyer, I tend to write the lyrics before I’ve even asked if I can use the music. I should tell them so they can make a better deal for me, it’s I’m really led kind of stupid, but I’m just led by my desires.
