This is in recognition of Sir Ernest MacMillan’s celebrated career as a conductor, in particular his many years with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (1942-1957) and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1931-56). The Award is intended to support the artistic development and career advancement of a young conductor; it may be used to assist with travel, a workshop or study program, participation in a festival or competition, or other relevant purposes. Candidates should be at an advanced stage of their musical education, under thirty years of age at March 1, 2012, and should be either Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. APPLICATION PROCEDURES The application should include: a) The applicant’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and signature. b) The applicant’s birth date and citizenship/resident status. c) A curriculum vitae of the applicant, with names of his/her principal teachers. d) An outline of the applicant’s proposed plan of study and/or performance, and other such information relevant to the application. e) Mention of any grants, which the applicant will receive or has applied for in support of his/her current career plans. f) Names of two referees, each of whom must be a recognized member of the musical profession, e.g., conductor, composer, performer, teacher, administrator; it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that each referee sends, independent of the application, a confidential letter of recommendation to the address given below. The application must be accompanied by six copies of a DVD recording of the applicant in both rehearsal and performance, public or private. The total timing of the DVD should be at least 15 minutes and not more than 30 minutes. The DVD must show the conductor leading an ensemble of singers, and the singers must be shown at some point in the video. There should be footage of the candidate shown full face (as seen by the musicians). The DVD will be used for selection purposes only, and will not be returned. The selection process will be adjudicated by a jury of professional choral conductors representing different regions of Canada, appointed by the Foundation’s board of trustees. There will be two rounds in the selection process. In the preliminary round, based on the applications, the jury will select up to three finalists. It is expected that the finalists will be notified by February 28, 2012. The finalists will participate in person in the final round of the selection process, which will take place during Canada’s National Choral Conference, PODIUM, in Ottawa on Saturday May 19, 2012. All finalists will rehearse the Elmer Iseler Singers for between 30 and 40 minutes in front of a jury and live audience. The costs of accommodation and travel will be provided for finalists who do not live in the Ottawa area. Finalists must agree to be available for media interviews. Immediately following the final round, the jury will determine the winner, although it may also withhold its recommendation if it considers no applicant is of sufficiently high artistic standard. The jury’s determination will be final and not subject to appeal. The results of the competition will be announced at the Podium banquet on the evening of May 19. Dr. Alexander MacMillan was a minister of The Presbyterian Church in Canada and later The United Church of Canada, and was both nationally and internationally recognized and respected as a hymnologist and expert in the field of hymnody and church praise. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on October 19, 1864, to Thomas MacMillan and his wife Margaret MacMillan (nee Henderson). He had an older step- brother, Thomas (the son of Thomas Sr. through a previous marriage), an older sister, Margaret, and a younger brother, John. He studied at the University of Edinburgh from 1880 to 1884 before attending the United Presbyterian Theological College, "Divinity Hall", in Edinburgh. Through the Student Missionary Society he worked in Canada during the summer and autumn of 1886, visiting and preaching as student minister to the community in Fort Frances in northern Ontario. Shortly after his ordination in 1887, Alexander returned to Canada and accepted a call to the pastoral charge of Auburn and Smith's Hill in Ontario, where he served until September 1891. By this selec- tive approach, it does not represent a conclusive view of Canadian music nor does this paper wish to ascribe national priorities more importance than is due. However, Canada has a unique relationship to the question of nationalism. All the arts, including music, have shared in the convolutions of national identity. The rela- tionship between music and nationalism takes on great significance in a country that has claimed cultural independence only in the last 40 years. Therefore, witnessed by Canadian critical res- ponse, the question of national identity in music has become an important factor. \ In utilizing a national focus, I have attempted to give a progressive, accumulative direction to the six chapters covered in this discussion.     Marius Barbeau and Musical Performers Elaine Keillor Abstract: One of Marius Barbeau’s important contributions to heightening awareness of folk music traditions in Canada was his organization and promotion of concerts. These concerts took different forms and involved a range of performers. Concert presentations of folk music, such as those that Barbeau initiated called the Veillées du bon vieux temps, often and typically included a combination of performers. This article examines Barbeau’s “performers,” including classically educated musicians and some of his most prolific, talented informants. Barbeau and Juliette Gaultier Throughout Barbeau’s career as a folklorist, one of his goals was to use trained Canadian classical musicians as folk music performers, thereby introducing Canada’s rich folk music heritage to a broader public. This practice met with some mixed reviews. There are suggestions that he was criticized for depending on an American singer, Loraine Wyman,1 in his early presentations. Certainly, in his first Veillées du bon vieux temps, he used Sarah Fischer (1896-1975), a French-born singer who had made a highly praised operatic debut in 1918 at the Monument national in Montreal. But in 1919, she returned to Europe to pursue her career. Since she was no longer readily available for Barbeau’s efforts, he had to look elsewhere. One of Barbeau’s most prominent Canadian, classically trained singers was Juliette Gauthier de la Verendrye2 (1888-1972). Born in Ottawa, Juliette Gauthier attended McGill University, studied music in Europe, and made her debut with the Boston Opera in the United States. The younger sister of the singer Eva Gauthier,3 Juliette Gauthier made her professional career performing French, Inuit, and Native music.

    'An Ancillary Weapon’: Cultural Diplomacy and Nation-building in Cold War Canada, 1945-1967 by Kailey Miller A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in History in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada September, 2015 Copyright ©Kailey Miller, 2015 Abstract This dissertation is a study of Canada’s cultural approaches toward the Communist world – particularly in the performing arts – and the ways in which the public and private sectors sought to develop Canada’s identity during the Cold War. The first chapter examines how the defection of Igor Gouzenko in 1945 framed the Canadian state’s approach to the security aspects of cultural exchanges with the Soviet Union. Chapters 2 to 4 analyse the socio-economic, political, and international context that shaped Canada's music, classical theatre, and ballet exchanges with communist countries. The final chapter explores Expo ’67’s World Festival of Arts and Entertainment as a significant moment in international and domestic cultural relations. I contend that although focused abroad, Canada’s cultural initiatives served a nation-building purpose at home. For the past 130 years, the Conservatory has presented a wide-ranging art music repertoire for studying piano and offered a comprehensive system for assessing students’ progress through its Examinations, recently retitled as The Certificate Program. The Conservatory’s internal examinations began in 1887, with the external examinations following in 1898. The latter preserved the format of the former and expanded through increasing the number of the examination centres across Canada for both financial and educational reasons. Despite varying opinions of professionals and amateurs on the efficacy and value of the piano examinations in particular from the beginning, this dissertation, using historical sources and interviews, argues that over the years the structure and content of the piano examinations, while innately conservative on the whole, have kept up with a changing demographic of students across the country, and either countered or taken on the many criticisms that surrounded them over the years despite geographical and financial challenges, and indeed competition from other institutions.
