Contemporaries of Vesalius in his Works

Maurits Biesbrouck, 2014, Roeselare (Belgium)

The list is alphabetical on the name, indexed as in O’Malley’s biography (names from before Vesalius’s period – such as Galenus, Celsus, Mesue, Erasistratus, Marinus, etc. - are not included)

Vesalius only mentions in the preface of his new edition of Guenther’s Institutiones anatomicae (1538, III): Joannes Armenterianus (A2r) and Leonardus Willemars and Marcus Florenas (A3v); and none in his contributions to the Galeni opera omnia (1541, V). In the Epitome (June 1543, VI.B) he only mentions Prince Philip II in the preface (Ab) and Johannes Oporinus (Ma). For the Chirurgia magna , see homepage of this site. Most names are in his other works: see the following table with the date of their publication. Except for the Fabrica 1555 pages are those of the first editions. Legend: a = upper part of the page, b = the lower part, f = folio, r = recto; v = verso.

Total of names 103 7 5 13 39 43 21 22 ______(a) Not a contemporary strictu sensu. (b) In the index of the Fabrica 1543 wrongly mentioned on p. 54. (c) Only in the copy of the Bibliothèque interuniversitaire de santé (BIUSanté, Paris). (d) This is p. 309 in Liber II, caput XLII (in the index of the Fabrica 1543 wrongly mentioned on p. 307). (e) According to Jean Dupèbe in his Discussion apologétique pour l'astrologie contre un certain médecin [on ], Paris: Droz, 2004, Vesalius must have meant 'Ollerio', or Houllier, an acquaintance of Jean Tagault. On the other hand Theodoor Goddeeris points to the fact that Oliverius was in the first place a politician: François Olivier, chancellor of France, and Vesalius may have met him in the suite of emperor Charles V in Bruges, where Olivier during almost a whole month negotiated with the English, after an intervention by the emperor. The negotiations turned out in nothing and Olivier returned to France with nothing achieved. Olivier was in Bruges in a delegation with the admiral of France in November 1545. The China Root Epistle dates from August 1546, shortly later. Perhaps Vesalius took the opportunity to introduce Roelant’s son to Olivier, now acquainted to him? Johann Gunther of Andernach dedicated in 1528 various translations of to Jean Olivier, the uncle of François Olivier, who was the abbot of the Abbey of Saint Martin in Soissons. The family of Olivier must have been acquainted with the universities. The Latin for the name of Jacques Houllier is Hollerius .
