Much of what the Student Health Services will be writing about in this column throughout the year deals with preventive health care. The obvious question is how important is preventive health care and how much difference will it make both in the short term and long term. This country's health care system is under attack from many directions. Abington Senior High School, Abington, PA, 19001 October 2019 It’s October! Th ink Pink! By Rachel Oh Th e start of October signals many things: colder nights, changing leaves, approaching early action/decision deadlines for seniors, and of course, the annual Pink Out football game! Versing Pennsbury this year on October 18th, the night is sure to be fi lled with excitement and is an easy opportunity to express school spirit through a great cause, with a sea of pink shirts swallowing the bleachers and the fi eld every year. Pink Out Shirts, designed by our wonderful Key Club, will be sold during the week of the 18th in Cafe A. However, instead of collecting the profi ts, the Key Club will donate all of the revenue from t-shirt sales to four foundations: Th e Breathing Room, Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, Unite for Her, and Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Th e Breathing Room specializes in supporting and caring for local families aff ected by cancer, while Unite for Her is committed to help women diagnosed with ovarian or breast cancer through free therapy. Living Beyond Breast Cancer provides information and off ers either online or in-person programs to those aff ected by breast cancer, and the Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, associated with Jeff erson Health, is an advanced medical center that personalizes in caring for any type of cancer. From the various missions these foundations strive towards, it’s evident that a $10 shirt can go a long way. Th e game lasts from 7pm-9pm at the Schwarzman Stadium, and it is a fun yet rewarding way to spend a Friday night.

One of my most vivid early childhood memories comes from the fall of 1972 when, as a five year-old, I was reading the sports section of one of the Dallas newspapers at my grandparents’ breakfast table. I am not sure how much I comprehended, but one fact leaped clearly from the page—Nebraska had defeated Army by the seemingly incredible score of 77-7. Wild thoughts raced through my young mind. How could one team score so many points? How could they so thoroughly dominate an opponent? Just how bad was this Army outfit? How many touchdowns did it take to score seventy-seven points? I did not realize it at the time, but that was the day when I first understood concretely the concepts of multiplication and division. Nebraska scored eleven touchdowns I calculated (probably with some help from my grandfather) and my love of football and the sports page only grew from there.

    2019-2020 Annual Report/Honor Roll

Manhattan Beach Education Foundation Annual Report & Honor Roll 2019-2020 Dear Friends of MBEF – You make it possible. Year after year, you — the parents, business leaders, educators, and neighbors of our community — recognize that great schools begin with strong foundations. Together we have committed to opportunities that invite our students to dream, to think, and to engage in what is possible. Because of your commitment, this year the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF) will make its largest grant to the Manhattan Beach Unified School District in its history — an investment of $7.5 million to strengthen our schools. We invite you to learn more about the specific programs MBEF will fund for the coming 2020-21 school year in this Annual Report & Honor Roll — the programs you helped make possible. Despite district budget cuts this year, support of MBEF continues to strengthen the academic journey of all students, from learning in smaller class sizes The Power to supporting learning from home. The road ahead remains full of challenges for our schools. The uncertainty around continued distance learning and the significant structural deficit in state funding are among the largest. But our community has proven that we are up to the challenge. We are steadfast in our efforts to grow local support of our schools — through MBEF’s Annual Appeal, of Possible the Endowment, and other critical initiatives — for the students of today and tomorrow. Thank you for standing with MBEF and our commitment to providing excellent educational opportunities for our children here in Manhattan Beach. We look forward to shaping what is possible together.

GAME NOTES Oakland Raiders (0-1) vs. New York Jets (1-0) Sunday, September 7, 2014 MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey Attendance – 78,160 1 2 3 4 Total Oakland Raiders 7 0 0 7 14 New York Jets 3 7 3 6 19 Result: Jets 19, Raiders 14 The Raiders opened the 2014 season with a 14-19 loss to the New York Jets, dropping the team’s all-time regular-season record to 434-376-11. The Raiders continue to lead the all-time series against the Jets 21-17 (8-11-1 on the road). Head Coach Dennis Allen’s record at the helm of the Raiders falls to 8-25 and 0-3 in season openers. Allen will seek his first win against AFC East competition in Week 3 when the Raiders visit New England. The Raiders have reached the postseason four times in franchise history (1970, ’72, ’74 and ’91) after dropping the season’s first contest. Each of the Raiders’ first three picks of the 2014 NFL Draft earned their first NFL starts in the game: LB Khalil Mack, QB Derek Carr and G Gabe Jackson (first, second and third rounds, respectively). The Raiders played extremely disciplined football in the first half, surrendering no penalties, turnovers or sacks in the half. The last time the Raiders had zero penalties, zero turnovers and zero sacks in the first half of a game came on Sept. 10, 1995 vs. Washington. WR Rod Streater’s 12-yard TD in the first quarter marked the first Raiders TD in the opening period of the season since Michael Bush had a 4-yard TD run against San Diego on Sept.
