NEWMEDIA As Soon As I Saw My Mate Phil’S Print out from an Apple Mac Postal Address: Computer in 1989 a Light Bulb Went Off in My Head Celebrating Volume 31. 1 & 2 Jocks’ Journal 30yrs January 1-31,2019 “Australia’s longest running radio industry publication” Jocks’ Journal Celebrates 30 Years NEWMEDIA As soon as I saw my mate Phil’s print out from an Apple Mac Postal Address: computer in 1989 a light bulb went off in my head. I then Brisbane realised it was now possible to 'have a go' at an idea I had for PO Box 2363 an ‘almanac’ trivia publication for radio presenters. For years Mansfield BC Qld 4122 I had collected ‘famous birthdays’ and ‘on this day’ trivia. I Web Address: suppose the seeds go back to the fact that I diligently kept a www.newmedia.com.au daily diary from all my high school years and beyond. Now as Email: we were entering a new age in computers and technology it [email protected] was possible to do ‘desk top publishing’. Phone Contacts: In January 1989 I borrowed my mate’s Apple computer, paid my friend Kerry to laser print a master Office: (07) 3422 1374 copy, then photocopied a sample edition for every commercial radio station and did a test run. Mobile: 0407 750 694 On January 25 we signed up our first subscriber. A fax came through confirming that a young4ZR announcer Clive Burnell (sadly passed on) had signed up. From then on the subscriptions kept rolling in and we never looked back. The first JJ only included an almanac section but soon grew to include radio news, radio jobs (page 3) and other radio-related articles. But when the ‘internet age’ hit in the late 90s I thought we might disappear but we adapted and continued. In 2018 we wouldn't be here it it wasn't for the loyal support of many individual subscribers and in particular -Community Stations, the Super Radio Network and Grant Broadcasters. Also 3AW, 2CH, Editor & Assistant to 2GB and Radio 97 have been with us through the whole journey. We even have the Overlanders Publisher Editor Steakhouse (Alice Springs) and Cafe Bean (Bunbury) who have been with us since the '90s. But over Greg Anne-Marie 30 years the landscape has changed ... radio news is now immediate, there are now several 'radio Newman James industry/media' websites and now less stations that are individually owned and run. Office/Web Radio Our one big change in 2019 will be the introduction of a monthly edition of Jocks' Journal. It will Assistant Columnist be 40 pages (and not 24) - like this edition and it's likely that in 12 months we may be just an online Jayden Dave publication. However with about half our subscribers still wanting a print copy - we will listen to our James Rogerson readers before deciding. Hope that's ok? But after a 30 year commitment to producing a fortnightly Assistant to mag I feel I need to 'wind down' a little. Interesting to note that I am writing this editorial 45 years to Editor the day that I began in radio as a teenager at 3BA Ballarat (Dec 17, 1973). Happy to say in 2019 I'm Christie still on air and I have commitments at two stations - 7 days a week. Still love it. And yes ... you can J bet that for every program I always have the JJ in the studio for my radio show prep. A big thanks to everyone that has signed on. And not forgetting my faithful wife Anne-Marie who has handled all the accounts, plus endless calls and emails. Kind regards, Greg Newman Editor and Founder. Office of Professor David Flint Chairman 27 October 2000 Hon. Paul Neville MP Chairman Standing Committee on Communications, Transport and the Arts RG.95 Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 [Dear Mr Neville] ABA Submission to the House Committee on Communications Government’s announcement of the inquiry into the radio industry, particularly the adequacy of radio services in regional and rural Australia, is very timely. The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) has implemented many of the provisions of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, including those relating to the planning and allocation of new services. Eight years later, it is opportune to consider the extent to which the deregulation of radio broadcasting has delivered improved services, and whether legislative provisions have adequately addressed community needs. The ABA welcomes the opportunity to provide the attached submission to the House Committee. The submission provides an overview of the effectiveness of the legislative provisions, in particular, those that are relevant to the Inquiry’s terms of reference. We would be happy to provide additional information on any particular aspect of the ABA’s submission should the House Committee so require. I note the House Committee may conduct public hearings in relation to matters covered by this inquiry, and I would be happy to attend if invited to do so. Please do let me know if we could be of further assistance in the meantime. Yours sincerely [David Flint] Submission by the Australian Broadcasting Authority to the House Committee on Communications Inquiry into the Radio Industry The changing regulatory environment Twenty years ago, a ‘typical’ regional Australian radio market contained, in addition to one or more ABC services, a single commercial radio station operating on the AM band.
