HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2013 ABSTRACT HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor Michael Newman The purpose of this project is to examine how the cross-promotional Lego video game series functions as the site of a complex relationship between a major toy manufacturer and several media conglomerates simultaneously to create this series of licensed texts. The Lego video game series is financially successful outselling traditionally produced licensed video games. The Lego series also receives critical acclaim from both gaming magazine reviews and user reviews. By conducting both an industrial and audience address study, this project displays how texts that begin as promotional products for Hollywood movies and a toy line can grow into their own franchise of releases that stills bolster the original work. -

Transmedia Star Wars
H-PCAACA Call for Chapters: Transmedia Star Wars Discussion published by Sean Guynes on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 CALL FOR CHAPTERS: Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling Edited by Sean A. Guynes and Dan Hassler-Forest We seek chapter proposals for a volume titledStar Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling, which aims to provide an account of the history of the franchise, its transmedia storytelling and world-building strategies, and the consumer practices that have engaged with, contributed to, and sometimes also challenged the development of theStar Wars franchise. We aim to have the collection in print by 2017, the year that marks the 40th anniversary of the first Star Wars film’s release. In those forty years, its narrative, its characters, and its fictional universe have gone far beyond the original film and have spread rapidly across multiple media—including television, books, games, comics, toys, fashion, and theme parks—to become the most lucrative franchise in the current media landscape, recently valued by Forbes at roughly $10 billion. A key goal of this project is to highlight the role and influence ofStar Wars in pushing the boundaries of transmedia storytelling by making world-building a cornerstone of media franchises since the late 1970s. The chapters in this collection will ultimately demonstrate that Star Wars laid the foundations for the forms of convergence culture that rule the media industries today. As a commercial entertainment property and meaningful platform for audience participation,Star Wars created lifelong fans (and consumers) by continuing to develop characters and plots beyond the original text and by spreading that storyworld across as many media platforms as possible. -

1 Star Wars Miniatures: Rebel Storm Wizards of the Coast a Review by Tony Watson the New Line
Star Miniatures: “Rebel Storm” 1 Star Wars Miniatures: Rebel Storm Wizards of the Coast A Review By Tony Watson The new line of WoTC Star Wars miniatures offers gamers a mixed bag. On the one hand, the first set, “Rebel Storm”, offers decently sculpted and pre-painted plastic minis of some of the characters and troops that make up the Star Wars universe during the time of the Rebellion (Episodes IV - VI in movie terms), and some straightforward, if a bit simplistic, rules for combat on a man to man scale that allow you to get into the action relatively easily. On the other hand, there’s the whole collectibility aspect to the game, something I’ll get to in a bit more detail later on. The Miniatures – Rebel Storm, the first series of miniatures, comprises 60 figures, 20 each of Imperial, Rebel and Fringe. The latter are a kind of neutral class that can be added to either a Rebel or Imperial force, and are made up of characters like the bounty hunters from “Empire Strikes Back”, and various aliens, including an Ewok and a Wampa snow beast. The characters in this faction include Lando Jabba the Hutt and cult favorite Bobba Fett. The Imperial line includes lots of stormtroopers: three versions of the basic trooper, a snowtrooper, elite snow and stormtroopers, as well as a scout troopers on foot and a speeder bike. The named, unique characters for the Imperials include two versions of Vader, General Veers, Grand Moff Tarkin, Emperor Palpatine and Mara Jade (the set’s nod to the post movie trilogy universe). -
Joining the Evil Galactic Empire a Review of Star Wars: Tie Fighter by Brennan Movius STS 145
Joining the Evil Galactic Empire A Review of Star Wars: Tie Fighter By Brennan Movius STS 145 Publisher: LucasArts Project Leads and Design: Lawrence Holland and Edward Kilham Very Special Thanks: George Lucas “The Emperor welcomes you intohis Imperial Fleet.. ..” As soon as I read those first words in ‘Tie Fighter’s Starfghter Pilot Manual, I was hooked. Fresh off the experience of ‘X-Wing’ ’, I was ready for its sequel. And with ‘Tie Fighter’,LucasArts promised to delivera very different gaming experience. While previously my exploits in the Star Wars universe had been limited to the perspective of the benevolent Rebel Alliance, this time, I was joining the ranks of the Evil Galactic Empire. And I was very excited to finally be playing the role of a bad-guy. So much so, in fact, that not ten seconds into the opening crawl I had already embraced the Empire’s ‘proactive’ stance on Galactic defense. And while it’s important to realize that there are two sides to every conflict (the Empire can’tbe all bad, can it?), somehow I sensed that my concerns we no longer with the unalienable rights of the galactic inhabitants. My allegiance was to law and order now and the Rebels,I was told, were tryingto undermine it. So let’s crush that traitorous Rebel scum! Serve the Emperor! Building on a Giant When LucasArts went about creating ‘Tie Fighter’ (the definitive, single-player, space- combat simulator) they had the enormous success of ‘X-Wing’ to build on. Indeed, ‘X- Wing’ combined many features that have now become standardon like-genre games, like pre-renderedcut-scenes, multiple crafts and weapons, 3D shadedgraphics, mission objectives, and in-game training. -
