CECILIA NOCILLI Universidad de Granada Beyond Dance: Analysis, Historiography, and Redefinitions The anthology Transatlantic Malagueñas and Zapateados in Music, Song and Dance: Spaniards, Natives, Africans, Roma opens with a suggestive image of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn in La Malagueña of 1921, which synthesizes the identity of the publication: an exploration of the transatlantic journeys of Spanish dance and its exotic fascination. The image thus manifests the opposition between the maja and the manolo (tough girl and tough guy), as between the Andalusian woman and the bullfighter. Preparing for the future: A description of client music preferences and musical preparedness of music therapists by Nathan A. Mensah, MT-BC A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement For the Master of Arts Degree Master of Arts in Music Therapy Program in the Departments of Graduate Studies and Music and Theatre Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana May, 2019 Abstract Music therapists often use client-preferred music in order to build rapport with clients, decrease their anxiety, increase relaxation, and increase overall efficacy of music interventions. The American Music Therapy Association states music therapists are required to play a wide variety of genres for use in sessions. Client’s musical tastes have grown diverse due to music streaming, and some music therapists may not have the musical skills necessary to recreate these styles in sessions. Currently, there is no data to show which genres and music styles are most commonly requested by their clients, or data to show which genres music therapists feel musically prepared or unprepared to use in sessions. A survey was used to collect data from board-certified music therapists to ask about which genres their clients most commonly request, as well as which genres they feel musically prepared using in sessions. The survey’s findings were that client’s most frequently requested Children’s, Classic Country, Classic Rock, Gospel, Hymn, Oldies, and Pop Music. Respondents reported to feeling most musically prepared to use genres that were most frequently requested by their clients. Music therapists reported not feeling musically prepared to use genres associated with World Music cultures or genres requiring use of electronic or synth- based instruments such as Bachata, EDM, Funk, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop/Rap, J-Pop, K-Pop, Latin Hip Hop/Latin Rap, Latin Pop, Merengue, Punk, Reggaeton, Salsa, Ska, Trap, and Video Game Music. -

Students will analyze dance’s role in improving and maintaining one’s health related fitness and then incorporate dance activities into their personal fitness program/plan. Students will learn basic steps as well as complex combinations in Merengue, Salsa, Bachata, and the Cha Cha. For each dance, the students will learn the historical and geographical roots, the music and the instruments associated with each one. This course will help students learn the skills of dance while improving their technique, poise, self-confidence and creative ability as well as deepening their understanding of and appreciation for the rich and colorful heritage that each dance represents. As a course involving couples’ dances, it will allow students to develop an understanding of the social etiquette involved in couples dancing. Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage. -

VODOU AND THE U.S. COUNTERCULTURE Christian Remse A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2013 Committee: Maisha Wester, Advisor Katerina Ruedi Ray Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Berry Tori Ekstrand Dalton Jones © 2013 Christian Remse All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Maisha Wester, Advisor Considering the function of Vodou as subversive force against political, economic, social, and cultural injustice throughout the history of Haiti as well as the frequent transcultural exchange between the island nation and the U.S., this project applies an interpretative approach in order to examine how the contextualization of Haiti’s folk religion in the three most widespread forms of American popular culture texts – film, music, and literature – has ideologically informed the U.S. counterculture and its rebellious struggle for change between the turbulent era of the mid-1950s and the early 1970s. This particular period of the twentieth century is not only crucial to study since it presents the continuing conflict between the dominant white heteronormative society and subjugated minority cultures but, more importantly, because the Enlightenment’s libertarian ideal of individual freedom finally encouraged non-conformists of diverse backgrounds such as gender, race, and sexuality to take a collective stance against oppression. At the same time, it is important to stress that the cultural production of these popular texts emerged from and within the conditions of American culture rather than the native context of Haiti. Hence, Vodou in these American popular texts is subject to cultural appropriation, a paradigm that is broadly defined as the use of cultural practices and objects by members of another culture.
