NON EMERGENCY TREATMENT

If you do not need emergency treat there are a range of alternative ser- vices for local residents to use, including:

THE MINOR INJURIES UNIT IN ORSETT Rowley Road, Grays, RM16 3EU, Tel: 0300 300 1527 open 7 days a week 10am-7:30pm (except last Thursday of the month 10am-6:30pm) providing a comprehensive nurse-led service which deals with a wide range of minor injuries.

NHS DIRECT HELPLINE If you’re unsure of your symptoms and want expert advice, you can call NHS Direct on 111. The service is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the call is free. You will be assessed and advised by a qualified nurse on the best course of action to take and whether or not you need to seek professional help.

HAROLD WOOD WALK-IN CENTRE: Open 365 days of year 8am-8pm Deals with minor illnesses and injuries that are not long-term conditions or immediately life-threatening problems. Tel: 01708 574000 choose option #2.

GPs: If you have an illness or injury that just will not go away, make an appoint- ment with your local GP. They provide a range of services by appointment, including medical advice, examinations and prescriptions. When absolutely essential, GPs can also provide home visits out-of-hours. Your GP surgery offers more than GP appointments. They have practice nurses that you can see too.

If you feel you need medical advice, an examination, or you have an illness or injury that requires a prescription, your GP surgery is best. If you’re not registered at a GP surgery and want to know your nearest one, send a free text with the word ‘Doctor’ to 64746 or call NHS 111.

SELF CARE A range of common illnesses and injuries can be treated at home simply by combining a well-stocked medicine cabinet with plenty of rest. Winter al- ways brings more coughs, colds and sore throats. If you start to have symptoms of flu or a heavy cold, stay at home, keep warm and take plenty of non-alcoholic drinks.

11

PHARMACIST You can visit your local pharmacy when you are suffering from a common health problem that does not require being seen by a nurse or a doctor. Your pharmacist can provide advice on common illnesses and the best medicines to treat them. Pharmacies offer more than prescriptions. They can advise on bugs and viruses, coughs and colds, aches and pains, tummy upsets and allergies.

Most pharmacists offer private rooms if you want to speak confidentially and you don’t need an appointment. To find your nearest pharmacist, send a free text with the word ‘Pharmacy’ to 64746 or call 111 (NHS)

OUT OF HOURS GP SERVICES: When you phone your GP practice out of hours (before 9am and after 6pm) a message will provide you with contact information for the out of hours GP service

ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY (A&E) OR 999: Accident and Emergency de- partments should only be used in a critical or life-threatening situation. A&E departments provide immediate emergency care for people who show the symptoms of serious illness or are badly injured. Dialling 999 and stating a medical emergency will result in a response vehicle being sent.

If you have either flu or diarrhoea and vomiting, then please stay away from A&E as you could pass it onto vulnerable people. If you have a scheduled appointment please contact the hospital to re-arrange your ap- pointment for when you are symptom-free. Many of these symptoms are best treated through self care including getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of fluids.
