Annual Report 2019

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The evolution of the WPNSW Board continued in 2018-19 with Rebecca Rippon and Mark Simpson deciding not to stand for re-election and Alan Balla stepping down due to other commitments. We welcomed back both Chris Shaw, and we’re fortunate to have Joanne Court, Anthony Brown and Alan Caldwell fill the vacated directors’ positions. In addition to the elected directors, Samantha El Safty and Ivor Dacic were appointed. Elected and appointed directors’ skills will significantly broaden the scope of the Board. This renewal of the Board has ensured a broad representation of the water polo community in NSW and the increase in the number of directors on the Board reflects a significant interest in investment by members contributing to their sport.

As highlighted during the 2017/18 AGM, David Whittaker did not renew his contract after four years as the Executive Officer, and a significant contribution to the sport during his time in the role. WPNSW appointed Rick Hooper to the EO role and Rick brings with him an enormous corporate experience. We look forward to working with Rick to increase the development and capability of water polo across the whole of NSW.

We are looking forward to the release of the Strategic Plan covering the next three years. It is in its final stages of development with ongoing consultations occurring and is due to be published around the time of this AGM in July 2019.

The release of the Strategic plan builds upon the strong effort over recent years of members, parents, officials and staff within our community. We are able to provide plans and leadership to boost our growth at the grassroots, establish pathways for referees and officials, expand our player pathways and education opportunities and further develop opportunities for competitions for juniors, masters and all in between.

In support of members, the introduction of an appointed Policy Committee will maintain parity with the ever- changing environment, already providing an improved focus on Member Care, Child Protection and Privacy amongst other identified areas.

As a “Post Script” to the 2018/19 year, Chris Dyson has decided to pursue opportunities in the corporate sector. Chris Leaves WPNSW after 5 years, during which time he has been integral in the growth and development of the sport including events such as the Sydney Youth Festival, State Team Programs.

Annual Report 2019

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER

2018-19 Year Water Polo in New South Wales had a good year, growth in the number of teams competing across the state, a strong increase in junior participation and a ground-breaking State Club Championships held on at one venue over 10 days combining to success in and out of the pool. The year witnessed substantive change within our sport, a single platform for members registration and competition management, the launching of learning platforms and new faces for both the Board and staff of Water Polo NSW. Our dynamic environment has acted as an enabler; shaping our focus on renewal, encompassing our members views and frame the future for Water Polo within NSW.

Built upon member feedback, the Board has guided the preparation of a 3 Year Strategic Plan. The plan details our goals to establish comprehensive pathways for coaches and referees, create access for regional players to development academies, a collaborative effort within aquatic sports to increase pool infrastructure in the state and support our club boards with the increasing demands of governance, and these actions have commenced.

2018-19 was a year of increased scrutiny and legislative requirements for sport in general, club executives and members. Recent changes to the Privacy Act, provisions within the Child Protection Act ensures that we are bound to provide an increasingly safe environment for our members both young and well let’s say experienced. WPNSW Board Policy committee is evaluating and improving our policies to further support our members and clubs in the delivery of our sport across the state.

Members, it’s all about members, Water Polo NSW is striving to place members central in our efforts, learning continuously from feedback and ideas received.

Increasing data accuracy provided by Revolutionise Member platform under pins these efforts, in member services and financial stability. Work is focussed on improving member experience within our sport and further attracting new members and participants.

Transparency and Communication, these are key processes guiding with WPNSW. Transparency is to ensure our members have access and input to information they require and effective communication on WPNSW processes and decisions as they occur.

On a personal note it is a privilege to serve the sport that I have been a part of since 1973 and I look forward to the year ahead.

Rick Hooper

Annual Report 2019

2018-19 IN REVIEW

In 2018-19 Water Polo achieved many milestones within key events, participation and sharing between members ensuring the year was a truly memorable and enjoyable year for everyone.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FESTIVAL Our State Championships were held at the same time for all age divisions in a single city. The concept was to maximise the enjoyment and expand the sharing and learning between players, coaches, referees and supporters.

Over the 10 days of the festival witnessed many achievements:

Over

▪ 100 teams participating

▪ 1,200 players pulling on their swimmers

▪ 200 team Officials

▪ 3,000 goals scored

and

▪ Nearly 400 games played

The event at the time was the single largest Water Polo event ever held in .

STATE TEAM PROGRAM Our top athletes again participated in the State Development and team program, the programming drawing from the top 18% of our players (402 players) focusses on improving fitness, skills and tactics. Outstanding players were selected and placed in State representative sides, subsequently participating in the Pan Pacific Youth Games held in July 2018 at Auckland New Zealand.

COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS Our Country athletes participated in the Country Club Championships and the Junior Country Club Championships with both events held in Newcastle.

At the Senior Championship 12 clubs fielded 45 teams made up of 495 players vying for honours over 3 days of tournament play, similarly at the Junior Championships 11 clubs fielded 54 teams made up of 590 players competing to be crowned State Country Campions.

Both tournaments were signature high quality events enjoyed by our regional playing community

STATE PLAYER ACADEMY Water Polo NSW was held over the 4 terms of the school year, 140-150 athletes per term ranging in age from U14 to U22 participated in development programs covering fitness, strength, skills and tactics.

Plans are under way to broaden the player academy to regional New South Wales to ensure that regional players also benefit from the best available coaching and development programs.
