History of Northern Lambda Nord

In existence for twenty years (1980-2000), Northern Lambda Nord (NLN) was one of the earliest gay and lesbian non-profit organizations in Maine. Based in Aroostook County, NLN’s bilingual membership was largely comprised of individuals from Maine and New Brunswick. The group started out as primarily a social and support organization, hosting potlucks, parties and field trips. By the mid-1980s, NLN had morphed into an outreach organization (though they continued to host social functions), primarily working to educate the local community on LGBT identity and acceptance and health and HIV/AIDS issues. NLN’s primary goal of being a support network for the rural LGBT community remained intact throughout their existence.

Because NLN existed at a “cultural crossroads,” it alternated its business meetings in English and French each month, and published its newsletter, Communiqué, and calendars of events, in both languages. The executive committee consisted of three Americans and three Canadians. NLN operated on a minimal budget and relied on membership dues, donations and grants to support itself. NLN remained an all-volunteer organization until the mid-1990s, when they were able to (briefly) hire an Executive Director.

The wide variety of LGBT publications and material from national organizations and other regional and local organizations indicates NLN’s knowledge of LGBT activity across the country. Calls to action, such as the boycott of Mother Earth Magazine in 1981 for refusing to publish gay-oriented advertising, further illustrates their involvement with and knowledge of national LGBT issues. Most of NLN’s outreach, however, was done on the local and state levels. As the organizational history states, “NLN is concerned with issues relevant to our specific region: being in a rural milieu, our ‘lifestyles’ as lesbian-gay people differ those of our sisters and brothers in Montreal, Boston, Toronto and San Francisco...Many of us in rural North America are still dealing with the basic issues of accepting ourselves as we are—lesbian, gay and healthy” (Box 1, Folder 7). As their mission indicates, NLN placed itself in a different context from gay urban culture, working to create a support network for rural gays and . Its camaraderie with other rural LGBT groups is indicated in the use of “rural North America, “ as well as the number of publications in the collection

3 from small town LGBT groups in places like North Dakota and Wisconsin. NLN’s awareness of work by other rural LGBT organizations strengthened its goal of creating an LGBT support network in Aroostook County and New Brunswick.

One of NLN’s most important projects was the establishment of its Gay-Lesbian Phoneline, which became the Maine HIV/AIDS Hotline. The Phoneline received numerous grants over the years to support its operations. It operated out of various members’ homes until it obtained a permanent home in Caribou at the NLN Community Center in 1994. Other local and statewide projects included organizing and sponsoring five of the Maine Lesbian and Gaymen Symposia (1986, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1999), educational outreach to the local community on HIV/AIDS and gay and lesbian health, and promoting the presence of the LGBT community in Aroostook County/New Brunswick through advertising, educational forums and civic involvement. NLN worked with several other Maine-based civil rights and LGBT groups to help pass the Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights Bill, which, after twenty-eight years of being voted down in the Maine State Legislature or by referendum, was finally enacted and sustained in 2005.

NLN faced significant discrimination over the years, especially from many local newspapers, radio, and television stations that refused to publish or air NLN’s ads or public service announcements. The Limelite at Loring Air Force Base and Northeast Publishing Company, which owned the Caribou Aroostook-Republican, the Presque Isle Star-Herald, the Fort Fairfield Aroostook Advertiser and the Houlton Pioneer Times, turned NLN advertising dollars away in the early 1980s. In 1986, the Caribou Chamber of Commerce refused NLN donation money for the Caribou Welcome sign and when NLN surveyed local businesses to seek their opinion on the matter, most responded negatively to the presence of NLN in the community. Other instances of discrimination include the Caribou Country Club’s denial of NLN access to their facilities for parties in 1986 and exclusion from the annual Acadian Festival in 1991.

One of its practices most important to NLN was maintaining and protecting its members’ anonymity. NLN maintained a Post Office box throughout its existence and had separate mailings for non-members, as only members received information on where events were held. One of the founders and most active members, Dick Harrison, expressed these sentiments best in a letter to New England Telephone after they had accidentally published the address of the Gay-Lesbian Phoneline: “Northern Lambda Nord is the lesbian and gay male organization in Aroostook County. We recently had a telephone installed in two of our members’ home [sic]. This phone is to serve as a helpline for gay people in our region...when the new directories were distributed, we were distressed to find out that you had not adhered to our request...[and published] the street address” (Letter to New England Telephone, December 1982, Box 8, Folder 727).

Though reasons are unclear for the group’s disbandment in 2000, it was most likely due to one of its most active member’s inability to further assist in running the group. In 2006, however, the group re-formed and is currently active in the Mars Hill area of northern Maine (www.northernlambda.org).

4 Description of the Archives

The Northern Lambda Nord Archives consists of materials that document the full extent of its existence from 1980-2000. Because many of the contents were not in any coherent order, the collection has been organized around fourteen major series. Series 1-10 contain the most extensive documentation, as they demonstrate how NLN operated as a non-profit organization on a daily basis and how they conducted outreach and educational endeavors in the community.

Series 1-5 contain comprehensive materials that illustrate how NLN was managed as a non-profit organization.

Series 1, Administration, contains the NLN Constitution and changes made to it through the years, an organizational history written by members of the group, the group’s mission statement, various NLN policies, and duties of Steering Committee members. It also contains materials relating to NLN meetings and elections, and nomination forms and ballots for the six-member Steering Committee. Agendas, fliers for upcoming meetings, Business Meetings, and General Meetings are all arranged together by date.

Series 2, Office Records, consists of three subseries: Daily Administration, Library, and Community Center. Daily Administration includes a variety of materials related to administrative functions of NLN, such as calendars, computer programs, letterhead, contact information, and plaques from area Chambers of Commerce. The Library subseries includes materials related to NLN’s lending library: card catalogs, a list of available periodicals, checkout forms, and input forms for new books. The Community Center subseries consists of materials related to the establishment of NLN’s community center in 1994. Included are listings of possible properties, Community Center policies, insurance information, a lease agreement, and rent receipts

Series 3, Membership, contains a wide array of documents relating to NLN membership. The series contains various incarnations of membership cards and forms, notes and fliers for membership drives, member attendance at events and parties, membership records and dues information, and member surveys. NLN conducted member interest surveys in 1980, 1984, 1990 and 1995 and a demographics survey in 1992. The series also includes a variety of outreach materials sent to NLN membership, specifically membership renewal letters for NLN’s 5th and 10th anniversaries.

Fliers related to NLN parties and events are located in Series 9, NLN Sponsored Activities.

Series 4, Financial Information, contains materials related to the fiscal management of NLN. The series contains bills and receipts (1979-2001), checks (blank and returned) and check stubs. There are also bank statements (1980-2002) from United States and Canadian banking institutions: Northern National Bank (which changed to Casco Northern Bank in 1984), County Federal Credit Union, and the Royal Bank of Canada. The series also holds budget reports and general ledgers of financial information, monthly treasury reports for 1993-1996, and tax forms and IRS materials related to NLN’s non-profit status.

5 Series 5, Fundraising and Donations, contains extensive documentation of the numerous grants NLN received during its existence. Also included are donation information (including loans NLN granted to members), and documents for a fundraising raffle. Note that grants received for sponsoring the Symposia are included here. The Chicago Resource Center and the Haymarket People’s Fund (Boston) awarded NLN the highest number of grants over the years. Of the twenty grants for which NLN applied, eleven were received, four were denied, and the status of the remaining five grants is unknown. Other institutions to which NLN applied for grants include the Astraea Foundation, Ben and Jerry’s Foundation, Maine AIDS Alliance, Maine Community Foundation, Maine Department of Human Services, Maine Share, Maine War Tax Funds for Life, RESIST, and the United Way. In 1989, NLN gave grant money to the New Brunswick Coalition for Human Rights for the purposes of publishing a newsletter. In 1991, NLN acted as a sponsoring agency for a grant from the Haymarket People’s Fund for the local group, Outright Too.

Series 6, NLN Organizing and Outreach, is divided into 7 subseries: individuals and organizations, organizations and events, religious organizations, advertising, correspondence, outreach publications, and print media.

All issues of Communiqué, the NLN newsletter, have been pulled and reside in the LGBT Periodicals Collection. The materials remaining on Communiqué in the NLN Archives consist of originals of the publication and materials related to the newsletter, such as advertising rates.

The first three subseries illustrate the various groups with whom NLN communicated. In the Maine/New Brunswick LGBT Organizations and Events section, there are some groups included from New Hampshire. This subseries is of particular importance, as it highlights the individuals and organizations with whom NLN communicated and illustrates how individuals and the community responded to NLN’s presence in northern Maine and the outreach work with which the group engaged. Issues of discrimination referenced in the history of NLN are contained in this series.

Advertising consists of various ads and public service announcements NLN placed in area papers and with radio stations. Some of the papers in which they placed ads include the Bangor Daily News, Community Pride Reporter, Fort Fairfield Review, Maine Campus (University of Maine at Orono student paper) and on a more frequent basis, the University Times, student paper at University of Maine, Presque Isle.

Outreach Publications contains Communiqué and a variety of brochures and pamphlets that provide examples of the types and topics of literature that NLN distributed and used for their educational initiatives. In addition to promotional materials on NLN itself, there are also materials on gay and lesbian health and HIV/AIDS. While there are materials from national organizations such as the American Red Cross and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are also outreach materials from a variety of Maine-based health and support agencies. A few examples of materials in this subseries include women’s safe sex kits, a cassette tape of Magic Johnson speaking on AIDS, and a guide on how to obtain gay reading materials in the local public library.

6 Print Media consists of clippings, press releases, and letters to the editor that the group gathered over the years. Of particular importance in this subseries are clippings about the 1984 murder of a young gay male, Charles O. Howard, and the community’s response.

Series 7, Legislative Issues, chronicles NLN’s interest and involvement in the political arena. Documents dealing with the Maine Human Rights Act, 7 different attempts in the 1980s and early 1990s, predominate, with correspondence and questionnaires sent to Maine legislators also present. A surprising gem is a document entitled ”Twenty Year History of the Maine Lesbian & Gay Civil Rights Bill” (Box 8, folder 685). This series includes materials from Boston and Ottawa, as NLN turned to these two cities as examples of progressive political leadership.

Series 8, The Gay-Lesbian Phoneline, contains material related to NLN’s work in establishing the first LGBT support-line in northern Maine. Established in 1982, the intent of the phoneline was to “give lesbians and gay men in northern Maine a place to call...a means to talk with other gay women and men, to get the support they need to help them deal with their homosexuality through this available dialogue with other gay people” (letter, 1982 Sep 23, Box 8, Folder 727). Although the phoneline was not staffed with trained counselors, the volunteers had referrals on hand to area doctors, attorneys, and other professionals who could lend further assistance to callers. In 1997- 98, NLN received a grant from the Maine Department of Human Services, and in conjunction with Health 1st, the health services division of the Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP), expanded NLN’s Gay-Lesbian phoneline into an HIV/AIDS information and prevention line.

The series includes logs of all phone calls received, correspondence, and details on phoneline training for volunteers. Logged calls indicate the wide array of issues with which callers were concerned: LGBT identity and acceptance, sexual partners, and HIV/AIDS. There were also a significant number of hang-ups and prank phone calls.

Series 9, NLN Sponsored Activities, is broken out into Calendars of Events/NLN Activities, and Photographs. The first subseries documents social and educational activities NLN held, primarily for its membership. Photographs consists entirely of photo albums that document early NLN social events and are housed in the Oversize section. Though there is little identification of individuals in the photographs, general headlines indicate the photographs are from events such as the first Aroostook Faerie Frolic, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas parties, and NLN anniversary celebrations. The photo albums include a range of dates from the early 1980s through 1996. One album contains a photograph tribute to Carl Grant, an older member of NLN who passed away in 1990.

Series 10, Symposium Materials, contains materials covering Symposia from 1975-1999. NLN organized and sponsored five Symposia, which were held in 1986, 1989, 1992, 1995, and 1999. The early name for the event was the “Maine Gay Symposium,” but the names of the Symposia varied over the years. For the years in which NLN was the sponsor, the official name was “Maine Lesbian and Gaymen’s Symposium,” except for the 1999 meeting, which was called “Maine Gay- Lesbian-Bi-Trans Symposium.” The materials in this series cover all aspects of Symposia organizing, from meeting notes and correspondence to registration and financial information. There is a significant amount of correspondence with and materials from Diane Elze, a Maine

7 LGBT activist, in the Symposia of the late 1970s. A group called Symposium Forever formed in 1997 in an attempt to ensure the future of the Symposium, though the last one was held in 1999.

Series 11, Awards, is a small series that contains awards given by and to NLN. These mostly include certificates of appreciation and volunteer recognition.

Series 12, Subject Files, was set up to keep materials from other regional and national groups separate from NLN’s work with local Maine and Canadian organizations. The files contain documents created by other groups to assist LGBT organizations in educational endeavors, materials from groups around the country, most notably newsletters which NLN exchanged with various LGBT groups nationwide, and materials from for-profit organizations that catered to the LGBT community, of which catalogs and brochures for gay merchandise, gay-friendly travel, and gay-owned businesses predominate. The latter materials are evidence of the growing LGBT commercial market in the 1990s. The series also contains some non-LGBT materials.

Series 13, Objects, consists of a variety of artifacts that could not be classified in any of the other series. Some items that stand out include Gay Monopoly, a rainbow Statue of Liberty figure, and a game called D.Y.K.E. (Do You Know Enough?), a “lesbian game” distributed by Lip Service, Inc. (1986). The game tests one’s knowledge of lesbian culture and history.

Series 14, Restricted, contains documents for which access is restricted for a period of 50 to 75 years, in order to protect the privacy of individuals. The materials are primarily membership records and records of Communique subscribers.

Series 15 Addendum

Series 16, Oversize, contains materials too large or bulky to fit into regular boxes. They have been listed within their regular series, and are included here to give their physical location. Box 14 holds items in legal-size folders. Box 15 contains posters and large paper materials as well as cloth banners and the clamps for attaching them to posts. Drawer 8 contains framed pieces, games, photograph albums and other materials too awkward for a box. Mapcase drawers hold large flat items, and there is one item so large and heavy that it stands in a corner of the Stacks with other such items.
