Masterworks from Munich: Sixteenth- to Eighteenth- Century Paintings from the Alte Pinakothek is the first major showing in this country of works of art from the renowned Bavarian art museum. Masterworks from Munich highlights examples of all the major schools of baroque painting within the wider context of the style's 16th-century antecedents and 18th-century evolution into the rococo. DISCOVERY AT THE l\IOSQUE EL AKS.A, JERUSALEM.-llo A DISCOVERY of considerable interest has been made in this :Mosque by the Rev. J. Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva­ tion.

Bu uygarlık M.Ö. 690-546 yılları arasında güçlü bir devlet olan Lydia Krallığı’dır. Bu krallık kısa sürede kuzeyde Karadeniz, kuzeybatıda Marmara Denizi, güneyde Lykia kıyıları, batıda Ege kıyıları ve doğuda Kızılırmak (Halys)e kadar olan geniş bir bölgeyi siyasi denetimi altına almayı başarmıştır. Daha dar anlamıyla Anadolu’nun batısında yer alan, güneyi Karia, kuzeyi Mysia, doğusu Frigya, batısı İonya ve Aeolya bölgeleri ile çevrili alana Lydia denmektedir. LYDİA UYGARLIĞI Tarihi Coğrafyası: İlkçağda bugünkü Gediz ve Küçük Menderes vadilerini içine alan bölgeye LYDIA adı verilmekteydi. Lydia ülkesi içinde, doğudan batıya doğru akan, üç ırmak bulunmaktadır: Kaikos (Bakırçay) Hermos (Gediz) Kaistros (Küçük Menderes) *Doğuda Phrygia ile olan sınırı kesin olarak bilinmez iken, *Batıda Lydia’yı Ionia Bölgesi’nden “Magnesia ad Sipylos” (Manisa) kenti ayırır, *Güneyde Lydia’yı Karia Bölgesi’nden Aydın Dağları ayırırken, en güneydeki kent “Tyrha”dır (Tire), *Kuzey sınırında ise Hermos’dan Temnos’a ve oradan da Dindymos’a (Murat Dağları) dek uzanan kesim oluşturur. LYDİA BÖLGESİ’NİN DOĞAL KAYNAKLARI • Hermos ve kolları her zaman yararlanılabilir su kaynaklarıydı; yağmurlar sürekli ve bereketliydi. • Dağlar ormanlarla kaplıydı, Tmolos Dağı üzerinde mermer yatakları vardı ve bu taşlar Lydialılar tarafından heykeltraşlık eserlerinin yapımında kullanılıyordu. • Kil yatakları sayısızdı ve içinde bol miktarda mika bulunan bu kilden yerli Lydia çanak çömleği ile kerpiç ve çatı-süs kiremitleri üretiliyordu. • Lidya maden bakımından da zengin bir bölgedir. Mt.Tmolos'dan gümüs , bakır , boya yapımında kullanılan “arsenik” ile, ilaç yapımında kullanılan “antimon” çıkarılıyordu; bu çağın en önemli ve tek kaynağı olan cıva yatakları vardı ve Lidya'lılar cıva ile metal levhaları gümüşleyip parlatarak ayna yapıyorlardı.

Creighton University [email protected] It has seemed opportune to republish this index in a corrected and extended version; there has been added to the list of names a list of selected words, and the method of referring to the text has been somewhat altered. The exact scope of C.H. Turner’s masterpiece is not immediately apparent from its title or subtitles (Canonum et conciliorum graecorum interpretationes latinae; Canones et concilia graeca ab antiquis interpretibus latine reddita). What one in fact finds here is an edition of the earliest surviving collections of church canons in Latin which are undoubtedly from the fourth century or have been assigned to it by at least some consensus of scholarship; some of them are translations from Greek, while others were originally drafted in Latin itself. Most of them, with the exception of the Apostolic Constitutions and Canons, are attributed to church councils. Turner, however, also offers a selection of doctrinal and historical material of enormous value, some of it indeed connected to the councils whose canons he edits; a comparison, for instance, of the creed contained in the synodical letter of the Council of Sardica with the Tomus Damasi, will suggest how far the doctrinal education of the western church advanced during the course of the fourth century. The connection of other historical matter to the canons is less obvious, however; one wonders what the Athanasian Historia acephala is doing here (granted that it is part of the collection of Theodosius the Deacon), however grateful one is to have the edition.

    An Incident of Magic in Heroides 20 and 21 Eva Anagnostou-Laoutides Introduction The myth of Acontius and Cydippe was narrated by Callimachus in his Aetia and by Ovid in the so-called “double Heroides”, a text that was in circulation at the time of Ovid’s exile, albeit in draft form.1 It relates Acontius’ efforts to secure a promise from Cydippe of amorous exclusivity. Acontius’ objective is achieved when Cydippe unintentionally swears an oath by Artemis. However, a closer reading of the two texts suggests that Cydippe’s oath draws on popular magical spells of near-eastern origin, which often included oaths.2 Under the longstanding influence of the Egyptians, the Jews, and the Babylonians, who excelled in the practice of magic, spells ― especially erotic spells ― became widespread in the Greco-Roman world, infiltrating its literary circles.3 During the Hellenistic period, a renewed interest in magic facilitated the cultural interface between the Greeks and the peoples of the East.4 Similarly, although magic was practised in Rome from the earliest times and the Romans were irrefutably familiar with Greek magic,5 towards the end of the Republic, a new array of magical practices that had 1 Call.
