KJHS Spelling Bee 10 Students of the Month 11 Throughout the year we have been providing students with professional development during Important Dates 12 early release days so they have more knowledge and an understanding of our goals at Kankakee Junior High School. Recently, we had twenty students complete a one day training in Peer Counseling. This is all a part of our Restorative Justice initiative. Students will work with other students in making wise choices when it comes to academics and focusing on what is important at school. We are proud to announce that our Restorative Justice measures have been showing signs of success. Our first semester data shows that our referrals are down by over thirty percent from the number of referrals we had this time last year. We are proud of all that our staff and students have accomplished. Our Boys’ Basketball Teams have had great success this year. Currently our 7th grade team is undefeated for the year and have won the IESA Regional Championship. They will complete in the Section Championship on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at 6:30 at Manteno Junior High School. Our 8th grade team will play for the Regional Championship on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center. Our Girls’ Volleyball Teams are off to a great start with many victories under their belt already. We want to thank our students and coaches for their representation of our school and the community pride they bring us. Please check with your child about school supplies. Without the proper supplies it will be harder for them to be successful. Progress reports for the third quarter will coming out soon. Please be sure to talk to your child about their academics and what you can do to assist them. As a reminder, we have a Homework Lab every Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:30 and there is bus transportation if needed. As always, thank you for entrusting us with the education and safety of your child. We continue to be innovative in bringing Best Practices and materials to our students to meet their educational needs. V OLUME 1 , I SSUE 2 P AGE 4 Language Arts Department Mrs. Brandt and Ms. Lee’s Co Taught Class - We were busy this past nine weeks! First we read the novel Freak the Mighty. We also watched the movie “The Mighty” which is based on the novel. We compared and contrasted the novel and the movie. We learned new vocabulary words. Students used reading strategies to answer comprehension question. Also during the quarter we learned about figurative language. We applied that knowledge to help us better understand Charles Dickens’s play “A Christmas Carol”. After reading the play, we watched the movie (the Patrick Stewart version) and then compared and contrasted the play and the movie. Right before winter break, students wrote poems using figurative language. Students learned about nonfiction and informational reading. We concentrated on text structure and text features. PowerPoints used to learn about figurative language, text features and text structure can be found on Edmodo. To reinforce learning, we play Plickers and Kahoot It. For the third quarter we are going to read and study The Tempest, a play by the famous playwright William Shakespeare. This unit is a favorite of the teachers. We were able to get a classroom set of Shakespeare’s The Tempest for Kids from KSD111 Student Services department and the author’s generous discount and his Go Fund Me page just for us.
