Starting in the 1710s and continuing through the eighteenth century, musicians of all types used Handel’s music on their concert programs, most especially during their benefit evenings.1 These special events were dedicated to promoting a sole performer (or other members of the theatrical staff at a particular playhouse or concert hall). As was tradition, performers would have organized these events from beginning to end by hiring the other performers, renting the theater, creating advertisements, soliciting patrons, and The Handel Festival in Halle took place this year from programming the concert.     NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XXV, Number 2 Summer 2010 REPORT FROM HALLE 2010 The Handel Festival in Halle opened this year on June 3 with the Traditional Ceremony at the Handel Memorial in the Market Square, followed by the Official Opening Ceremony and the Opening Concert. The latter two events were separated from each other for the first time, allowing for a more extensive concert. The guests invited to the Opening Ceremony witnessed the Handel Prize of the City of Halle being awarded to Cecilia Bartoli, who had performed a hugely popular concert in the city last October and who would present another on the final night of this year’s festival. The theme for this year’s festival was “Knights and Heroes” and the musical focus was on operas derived from Ludovico Ariosto’s 16th-century epic poem Orlando furioso. As usual there were more concerts and other events than one person could attend. The Opening Concert featured the Händelfestspielorchester Halle conducted by Karl-Heinz Steffens, since 2008 the General Music Anthony Hicks (1943 - 2010) Director of the Staatskapelle Halle, in music by Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Adolph Hasse, Giovanni Batista Mele and ANTHONY HICKS REMEMBERED Nicola Porpora, as well as by Handel. There are far more female dancers, actresses, and singers than there are male performers. This inequality is amplified by fewer numbers of roles for women. This document examines gender inequality in contemporary North American operas, including the various factors that can influence the gender balance of a cast, with focused studies on commissioning organizations and ten works that feature predominantly female casts. Chapter 1 presents the analysis of all operas in OPERA America’s North American Works database written and premiered from 1995 to the present. Of the 4,216 roles in this data, 1,842 (43.6%) are for female singers. Operas written by a female composer or librettist have 48% roles for female singers, operas with a female lead character have 51%, and intentionally feminist or female-focused operas have 53% roles for female singers. Chapter 2 considers ten companies devoted to the creation and production of contemporary opera in North America. Works premiered by these companies have an average of 47% roles for women, and companies with a female executive or founder are more likely to have a higher average. Companies that use language like “innovative” or “adventurous” in their mission statement are more likely to have greater female representation in the casts of their commissioned works.

As a high school student back in the late 90’s, I was first introduced to a piece of theatre that would become one of my favorite and most beloved musicals. Watching closely as Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, Robert Westenberg, and Joanna Gleason took to the stage bringing a magical fairy tale to life, I was captivated by not only their stellar performances, but by the intricacies of Sondheim’s music and by the dark reality of wishes fulfilled. The mesmerizing way that this piece weaves the familiar stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella together through a story connected by a childless Baker and his Wife has something for everyone to identify with. This play spoke to me as an angsty teenager with hopes and ambitions, but the story is even more resonant for me as an adult who has seen some of her wishes fulfilled and has learned that although a “fairy tale ending” is what we all hope for, in reality- a sense of longing and the challenge of adapting to unexpected change is inevitable.
