Interdisciplinary Research – Jane Southworth Jane Southworth presented information about the role of interdisciplinary research and related ways to identify experts along with finding collaborators across disciplines.  Groups that are involved in interdisciplinary research are already involved through centers.  Collaborations are currently through grass roots organization. Emails usually go out to each college, then faculty just get together to apply for a grants.  One problem with interdisciplinary research is that it is expensive and when applying for a grant, it is hard to prove collaborations.  Usually researchers to do not receive grant funding on the first or second submissions. Faculty must show that they have been collaborating for several years.  It’s hard for junior faculty to get involved while working for tenure.  The Office of Research provides services and assistance to faculty who are submitting grants.

UF Journals & Press – Bill Link  University Press of Florida is made up of many universities from around the state that helps with funding.  Representatives from each university sit on the Board which meets four times a year in Orlando.  UPF publishes books on “Florida” related subjects in anthropology, archeology, history, some literature, dance, Latin America, etc. The organization does not publish journals. Its goal is to further scholarship.  Funding has declined over the years causing cutbacks in staff.  Florin will try to find out what journals are based on campus.

Distinguished Professors – Angel Kwolek-Folland  The awarding distinguished professor procedure has been looked at for many years.  The role of distinguished professor has changed over the last few years.  Are distinguished professors needed?  In 2008, a group of Distinguished Professors reviewed the process of nominating candidates and submitted a proposal to the Provost.  Topics that bubbled up during discussion o Funding income o Expectations with the title o The process awarding the title o Time limit?  Suggestion: UF should have three areas: Distinguished Teaching Professor; Distinguished Service Professor; Distinguished Research Professor.  Suggestion: UF should have an adhoc committee review and discuss this issue  What’s our action plan? o Council should do a survey and then write a memo to Faculty Senate Chair o Mindy will check with the Graduate Council about handling the survey.

Meeting was adjourned at 10:55 a.m.
