Monday, April 26, 2021 | No. 165 One of the things moviegoers like most about going to theatres is seeing films on the Big Screen, "the way they were meant to be seen." What people don't realize is that when films started in the mid-1890s, there were neither screens nor projectors. The very short films of that era were meant to be seen individually by looking into peep show machines in arcades. Those Kinetoscope devices were one of many inventions from Thomas Edison's factory in West Orange, NJ. Since Edison was monetizing his Kinetoscopes quite well, he had no interest in developing a machine to project film images on walls. Others, however, saw a big future in showing films to groups of people. Monday, April 5, 2021 | No. 162 Happy 95th birthday to legendary filmmaker Roger Corman, born on April 5, 1926. Known as "The Pope of Pop Cinema", Corman began his career in the 1950’s as a writer, director and producer of low-budget genre films, including westerns, horror and sci-fi cult classics such as Highway Dragnet (1954), The Day the World Ended (1955), It Conquered the World (1956), Not of This Earth (1957) and House of Usher (1960). He became the leading filmmaker for American International Pictures, the producer-distributor of 1950’s and 60’s low-budget, independent films which were popular as drive-in double features. At AIP, Corman’s technique was to work very fast and very cheap, often shooting multiple films back-to-back on the same location. AIP made the most of Corman's production skills, frequently beginning a film’s development by creating a poster and then showing it to movie fans to gauge interest. Corman created a factory for micro- budget filmmaking which gave break-in opportunities to young directors and actors at the start of Happy Birthday to their careers. Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, James Roger Corman – Click to Play Cameron, Joe Dante and Jonathan Demme all learned their filmmaking techniques by working on projects with Corman. Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern, Charles Bronson, Dennis Hopper, Talia Shire, Sandra Bullock, Diane Ladd, William Shattner and Robert De Niro gained visibility as young actors in Corman’s low-budget productions. In 1960, Corman directed for AIP the horror film House of Usher, starring Vincent Price, based on an 1839 short story by Edgar Allan Poe. -

Hamlet swears to take revenge but wants to make sure that he is acting morally despite the corruption that surrounds him. He ascertains Claudius’ guilt by using a play scene as bait and also tries to tempt his mother away from her new husband’s bed. Claudius, fearing Hamlet, plots to have him put to death in England but his plan fails when Hamlet escapes and returns to Elsinore. In the final catastrophe, Hamlet succeeds in killing Claudius but not before he, himself, is fatally injured and his mother is also slain. 2. In 1987 Bill Alexander directed Har- riet Walter, Nicholas Farrell and Donald Sumpter at The Other Place, in a production which emphasised aspects of psychological exploration. The small scale dictated by the size of the theatre became a positive advantage as the audience were invited into an intimate contact with the actors as they picked their way through the maze of events. More recently, Alexander has re-di- rected the play in the main house at Stratford-upon-Avon using a cast dominated by much younger and less experienced actors. Here the vast bronze and stone effect set - which opened on occasion into a still larger space - propelled the performance away from psychology and towards a clear, fast-moving explication of the events which circumnavigated, rather than engaged with, the soli- loquys which punctuate the text. Indeed, the opening scene was re-organised so that it became an ensemble recitation of the be- ginnings of a chronicle-tale rather than the stilted conversa- tion between the two gentlemen of the text. In these two pro- ductions, then, Alexander has explored the divergent elements of this play. The purpose of this paper is to enquire whether or not these elements, of plot and psychological exploration, are at odds with each other in Shakespeare's text. -

Paul Prescott There are as many different ways of responding to a performance as there are audience members. The performance reviews section of Shakespeare Bulletin offers a snapshot of international responses to productions of (or rooted in) the work of Shakespeare and his contemporaries; this is an archive not of the performance object, but of experiences and reflections. Theater reviewers are the makers of tomorrow’s theater history; the accounts in Shakespeare Bulletin will, we hope, be of value to future explorers of performance history as well as those triangulating their own responses to productions they have just seen. But no review can be exhaustive, just as no experience of a production can be comprehensive. We encourage reviewers to embrace their own subjectivity and focus on those aspects of a production that matter to the reviewer’s interpretation. While reviews will give the descriptive detail that provides the basis for interpretation, the reviewer’s own emotional and intellectual response to event and context will shape their choices of focus and argument.
