We should have gone as soon as he arrived on Friday, a mistake I will discuss later.

Unfortunately, Dad didn’t come over for it, only the 3rd time over the last 28 years in which we didn’t make it to the car show together. While disappointing to not have my main sidekick with me, I didn’t have to go alone and learned the ins and outs of attending a show this big. We’ll have another opportunity to when the show occurs again in 2019, so hopefully he can come for that one. If you read my article on the Retro-Classics show in Stuttgart back in March, you may recall that I was accompanied by some fellow die-hard car guys: fellow ex- pats with a pretty unique fleet of vehicles. Two of them, Jimmy and Anthony, jumped at the opportunity to take in the Frankfurt show over a long weekend. We borrowed my wife Kate’s rusty but reliable BMW 5er wagon for the trip. It’s decidedly roomier than Jimmy’s M3 or Anthony’s Hellcat and we don’t worry about it getting dinged up in the parking garage.

The show, at least from a public perspective, has an appearance similar in many respects to any other new-car show. Many different car manufacturers have their latest and Continued on next page PORSCHE PROFILE • NOVEMBER 2017 21 Frankfurt Auto Show from page 21 greatest on display for the public to wear out the driver’s seat, leave finger prints on the chrome, and blast the radio in a vain attempt to blow the speakers. However, there are several key differences, not the least of which is the sheer magnitude of this show. More importantly are the “Weltpremieres” (world premieres) of new models during press and trade days leading up to the public opening. The slogan “Future Now” served to underscore the theme of this year’s show and paid homage to the vast digitization and automation occurring throughout the industry. To understand the size of this show, it’s helpful to have a comparison. According to the Frankfurt Messe’s website, it has 366,000 square meters of indoor and 96,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition space. Considering the indoor BMW had a track which wrapped around and outside space only, this is roughly 6.5 times bigger than theTampa of the presentation area, terminating on a giant stage with a Convention Center. This was evident to us immediately, massive LED backdrop screen. This allowed for an audience as we walked past the ticket stands into immediate sensory extending beyond the presentation stage and into the main overload in the BMW hall. While the actual premieres of the new M5 and other insider, both BMW and Mercedes own their respective vehicles occurred during the press days, we did get to see a exhibition halls, avoiding exorbitant rent and allowing more couple of 7s making loops of the track...pretty neat. Over at freedom to build elaborate displays showcasing their vehicles. the Mercedes-Benz hall, a series of multi-story LED panels suspended from the ceiling became an integral part of various model presentations. Four of these panels were movable sideways, forming individual or one, single giant screen depending on the program.

In the next issue, I’ll share my experience of getting up close and personal with the three new model variants that Porsche premiered at Frankfurt this year as well as to discuss the consequence of waiting until Saturday to see the Porsche display. I hope you stay tuned.
