WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC. HALL Inc.

WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOCIATION AGM 2018 Windellama Progress Association held its AGM on Sunday 8th July and there was an attendance of over 20 people on a cold Sunday morning. Thank you to all those who attended and thanks for the apologies from those who couldn’t make it but were keen to be involved. President Gary Lourigan spoke about the year that has gone and of the financial support Progress was able to give to Windellama Public School, through the P & C Association, the Windellama Garden Club, the Windellama Historical Society, the Little Athletic Club and Peanuts Funny Farm. Whilst this financial support has monetary gains for the groups, it more importantly displays the moral support and belief the Association has for the Community. Gary also thanked all the volunteers who manage and work the Monthly Markets which are a true success story for the Windellama area. Gary also pointed out the many different groups who make use of the Hall and its facilities including two future bookings by RV Clubs. There was only one sad note at the meeting with Alan Chapman stepping down as Public Officer for the Association after many years (A poor excuse of turning 90 was given). We thank Alan for his all his efforts in this important role. Gary Lourigan then thanked the team that has been the Progress Association for the past year for all their efforts in achieving all the significant tasks we covered in 2017-2018. Kevin Muffet then took the chair and declared all positions vacant and held the Election of Office Bearers for 2018-2019. Page 6 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - August 2018 The Windellama Progress Association recently dedicated some of the seating facilities overlooking the oval to honour members of the community. It was considered that these members had given outstanding service to the community, not just to Progress but to various community organisations. These people, so nominated, have given unselfishly of their time and energy for the benefit of Windellama. The persons so recognised are: Helen Williams, Gregory Knights, Frances Knights, Judy Alcock, Alan Chapman, Merv and Shirley Cornish, Cathy Meehan, Norm and Dinah Gegg, and Julian and Paula Vanslambrouk. The dedication ceremony was well attended and whilst they cannot be thanked enough for their efforts, it is hoped this recognition shows that their work is not only appreciated but

important to Windellama.

August in Your Garden By Irene Turner Prepare both your flower and vegetables gardens for spring. Add compost any dry animal manure, dig it into the soil with generous handful of complete fertilizer and lime (not for acid lovers like strawberry, blueberries) per meter. VEGETABLES TO SOW;- Seeds;- Carrots, parsnips, lettuce, silver beet, onions, peas. Asparagus, and rhubarb crowns. Plants;- Cabbages, Lettuce silver beet, onions, FLOWERS; Seeds;- petunias and phlox. Seedlings;- Pansy, viola, stocks, snapdragons, aquilegia, carnations, dianthus, primula, dwarf sweet Williams, alyssum, poppies and larkspur. Roses can still be pruned now, and spray with lime Sulphur. Spray apple, pear, plum, quince and your roses with Winter oil, this controls mite and scale. If you get leaf curl on peaches and nectarine spray with Lime Sulphur or Bordeaux, no later than the pinking of the buds. Don’t forget to spray flowering peaches as well. Things to do this month;- Stake young trees, using loose ties, to prevent damage from August winds. Pinch-prune dead flowers from pansies and viola to stop them forming seeds. Helps to repeat flowering. Prune japonica camellias after flowering if you need to shape them or reduce their size. Apply a camellia fertilizer. Tie sweet pea vines loosely to their supports, some won`t flower until the days are longer. Check ferns for scale insects, and cut off affected fronds, then feed with liquid fertilizer to encourage fresh growth.

Just a couple of pics for the news on the progress of the Nadgigomar bridge, which I drove across today Wednesday 4/7/18. As can be seen in the pics, further work is to be carried out on the approaches and exits to the bridge. Gary Johnson

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News Our Garden Club would like to aplogise for having to cancel the Pot Luck Luncheon at the Windellama Progress Hall this month on Thurday 12th due to unforseen circumstance. On Saturday August 11th we will host our Annual Cake Auction where all funds raised will go to the Goulburn Can-Assist. Once again we are seeking the support of the community for donations of cakes etc., for auction that will help in raising funds for the Goulburn Can-Assist. Also, if you can help with this fund raiser it will be greatly appreciated. Just a reminder what the Goulburn Can Assist group do is that they offer financial assistance, practical support and accomodation for country people suffering from cancer. On Saturday morning 14th July at our place the birds were skating in their drinking receptables up to at least 10am. The rainfall at our place for the last 3 months was April 14.5mm, May 15mm and June wackydo 33mm. All up for these 3 months 62.5mm – not good. Currently, for July 2mm. I say for our place because as you drive along Windellama Road it could be raining in some spots for a 100 metres or so and nothing elswhere. Take Saturday night 14th for instance at around 7.30pm to 8pm the temperature as we drove along Windellama Road varied between 4 deg Celsius leaving Goulburn, 2.5 deg Celsius at the Airport, 1 deg Celsius further on and O deg Celsius at our front gate. By now at our place we have sprayed all the dormant fruit trees with a copper based spray and in a weeks time will do again to help combat curly leaf in the peach trees and fungal infections in the Apricots. We have also replenished all the fruit fly traps with new baits and added extra home made traps. We have also made some Codlin Moth Traps. Similar design and make as per the Fruit Fly traps but with larger entry for the Codlin Moth to enter. However, the bait for Codlin Moth is slightly different to the bait for Fruit Fly, we use is as follows, 1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar, half a cup Molasses or Treacle, 1 teaspoon of Ammonia and 4 cups of water. Mix ingredients together in a watering can and add to traps. Our traps have been placed near the Apple and Pear trees plus throughout our collection of trees. In the next week or so all Apple and Pear tree trunks will be sprayed with Yates Success on a 2 weekly basis and with luck, this spraying will also help to reduce the incidence of Codlin Moth damage. On an alarming matter I have found some Fire Weed plants growing on the side of the road outside our place. Anyone who has seen how rampant this weed can become will realize how concerned I am. My friends down Bega way refer to it as Bega Canola because when you view the paddocks where it grows they are completely yellow, similar to paddocks of Canola when in flower. This weed completely ruins pasture for any type of live stock and long term grazing slowly poisons the animals feeding on it. I get the feeling that people responsible for control, including government departments just throw there hands in the air and say it's to hard to control. On Tuesday 3rd July our Club and Willow Glen carried out an annual garden maintenance at St. Barts. The weather was kinder this year and work was completed followed by a cuppa and food goodies plus a natter on what is happening in our gardens. Our next club meeting will be the AGM on Thursday the 26th July. Details on 48447061. Harry Simm Secretary Windellama Garden Club Inc.

Turnouts July has been a busy month for the brigade with numerous fires across the area. Crews worked especially hard tackling a blaze across 4 days at Jerralong road. Thanks must go to the brigade members for providing a constant turnout to the property to patrol and black out.

This fire is a reminder to all property owners to consider the conditions before lighting up any pile and hazard reduction burns. The drier than average conditions can lead to unpredictable fires. Monitor the conditions and expected weather for when you intend to burn. Notify Yass Fire Control Centre (02 6226 3100) and your neighbours at least 24 hours prior to when you expect to begin burning. Christmas in July This past month also saw the brigade catering team provide a wonderful feast in the form of Christmas in July. A big thanks to the Catering Team; Marlene, Judy and Katie, and all the others who assisted in helping make it a worthwhile event. With 27 people in attendance the afternoon was enjoyed by all.

‘GREBEY’ By Kay Muddiman – Media Officer

‘Grebey’ was an Australasian Grebe that was found on the side of the road just outside Crookwell, unable to fly and with suspected leg problems. Australasian Grebes are divers, spending all their time on water, rarely taking to land. They have lobed toes and can hardly walk on solid ground, as their feet are positioned towards the rear to assist in swimming. Their legs are also too weak for take-off from land. They are poor flyers, and often get stranded on land, mistaking a wet road in the moonlight for water – just as Grebey did. Upon examination it was found that Grebey had an old injury to the joint above his left foot, resulting in loss of blood supply to one of his toes, which had subsequently died and was 'hanging off' his foot. A trip to the vet for amputation of this toe and a full examination followed, which resulted in Grebey being given a clean bill of health apart from loss of Clockwise from top: Grebey in carry cage on his way the toe. to release; Left foot showing amputation site; Close up of lobed toes; Grebey on release into the dam. Very kind neighbours of ours offered him a (Photos by Kay Muddiman) home on their spring-filled dam, which is surrounded by reeds and other native vegetation, also full of insects and little fish – just ideal for a homeless grebe! After 24 hours observation, Grebey was released onto the dam. To everyone's joy he swam strongly, and after a few minutes began diving for food – if ever there was a happy grebe, Grebey was it! Should you need advice or help with injured or distressed wildlife, please ring the WIRES Rescue Number 1300 094737. Your call will be logged and directed to the appropriate branch electronically when, as always, our volunteers will be only too happy to assist. Until next time, take care all – Kay

Tarago & District Mens Shed News Greetings to our members and the community. The New Shed Stage 1: Great news! We have been successful in our grant application to the Veolia Mulwaree Trust to fund Stage 1 for the initial construction of the new Shed. At the recent Veolia Tarago District Plan meeting we were presented ith a notional cheque for $86,280. Now we need to get the engineering details from our preferred suppliers and submit to council an application for a construction certificate then we can start building! The aim is to have Stage 1 finished by Christmas. Stage 2: An application has been made to NSW Community Building Partnerships for water tanks and reticulation. Stage 3: We are about to seek a quotation for the addition of a ceiling and dividing wall to create the recreation area. If we are successful in getting funding we hope to have this included in the construction of Stage 1. Veolia Site Tour: Shed members have been invited by Veolia to tour the Woodlawn facility. The Shed will negotiate for a Wednesday in mid to late August. Interested members are asked to advise the Secretary. Shed Security: We ask the community members to keep an eye out for any unusual activity at our current location the Show Grounds. Facebook Presence: We hope to establish a Facebook presence soon. We will advise members when this is up and running.

Spring Get Together: We intend to have an open day to get as many members as we can to the Shed. Current thinking is for a Sunday brunch in October with briefings on Shed issues and possibly a speaker. Well Done to the CWA Evening Branch. Several Shed members attended the Christmas in July trivia night conducted as a fund raiser for the recently established evening branch of the CWA. It was a great night, good to see the Village Hall full of jovial locals. Drum Stick BBQ Lunch: Wed 8 Aug at the Shed. Please advise attendance for catering purposes. Willow Glen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com On Tuesday 3rd July we were joined by the Windellama Garden Club, at the Windellama Church, and we all proceeded to prune and do general cleanup. With Reverend Peter overseeing us – we tidied up and took a ute load plus a trailer of pruning away. While Warren was away we all decided to have a break and cuppa and sample all the lovely morning tea. Thank you to all who helped on the day.
