What a special treat! Special Achievement awards at the 2012 Regional and Sectional Figure Skating Championships!

U.S. Figure Skating Special Achievement Awards are pins given to athletes to encourage performance-related markers in their programs at the Regional, Sectional and Junior National Championships. Awards are given out for free skate event segments in all levels at the Regional Championships. Pins are awarded at the Sectional Championships in Juvenile through Novice Pairs, Singles and events at the Sectional Championships. Junior Board takes ACTION (submitted by the Junior Board) On Friday, October 21, 2011 the All Year Figure Skating Club Jr. Board held its annual “Maryvale Skate Night.” Maryvale was founded in 1856 by the Daughter’s of Charity, and was the first orphanage for children in the city of Los Angeles. Today, still supported by the Daughter’s of Charity, the organization has grown and evolved over the years to care for children in need. Maryvale provides care in various ways, not just to children, but to families as well. They have family resource and education centers, they provide mental health services, girl residential based services, and transitional housing and after care. Their mission is “to help each child achieve fulfillment, dignity, and self-esteem in an environment of stability, love, and respect”. We were fortunate to have about fifty girls from their residential facility join us for the fun filled night. First, the girls were entertained and watched some of the All Year Junior Board Members skate programs. Then, they were able to join the members out on the ice. After ice time, the girls were treated to pizza and cake. Many people contributed to make the night a success, among them were Helene Krasner, Maria Harrison, Anne Finestone and Mrs. Kawamura. If anyone would like to make donations (skating in nature) to the girls at Maryvale, please bring them to the Culver rink and Bobbi McRae will ensure that the items are appropriately received. Presently, the Jr. Board is busy gathering gifts for their adopt-a-family this holiday season. They have adopted a family of four. The Junior Board also held bake sales at the annual Winter Recitals on December 9th and December 16th to help raise money for future charitable events.
