It’s a Great Time toCoaches Be a Griffon 2011-2012 Griffon Basketball HEAD COACH LYNN PLETT Lynn Plett begins his fifth season at the helm of the Griffon Women’s Basketball program. Plett guided the Griffons back to the MIAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. He also guided the Griffons to a winning record for the first time since 2004-2005. Western finished with a 14-13 overall record and 11-11 in MIAA action. He coached two players who earned MIAA honors. Jessica Koch was named to the All-MIAA Second Team while Rachel Luteyn earned All-MIAA Third Team. Luteyn was also named the Missouri Western State University Female Student-Athlete of the Year. In 2009-2010 Plett coached Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection Jessica Koch and In 2008-2009, Koch was also named the MIAA Freshman of the Year. In 2007-2008, Plett’s first year at MWSU, he had three players named to All-MIAA teams and two All-Region selections in Jill Johnson and Yanique Javois. Plett came to MWSU from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, where he led the Flyers program HEAD COACH LYNN PLETT for the previous five seasons (2002-2007). Plett became the seventh Missouri Western head coach on June 20, 2007. During the 2006-2007 season, Plett led his team to a school best 28-4 record and was the host institution and #1 seed of the 2007 Great Lakes Regional Tournament. Lewis also won both the Great Lakes Valley Eastern Division Conference Championship and Great Lakes Valley Post-Season Tournament Championship. His team achieved a national ranking as high as #7 in the NCAA Division II Coaches Poll and finished the season ranked #12. He was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Head Coach of the Year and NCAA Division II Region 4 Coach of the Year. At Lewis, Plett inherited a program that finished 7-19 in its previous season. In just three seasons, he led the Flyers to a 19-11 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004-2005. His first team to make the NCAA Tournament also excelled in the classroom, as they finished the season ranked #13 on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll with a team grade-point average of 3.43. In 2005-2006, Plett’s squad returned to the NCAA Tournament and moved up to #8 in the WBCA Academic Top 25 poll with a team GPA of 3.515. During his tenure at LU, he led two NCAA Division II All-Americans, two NCAA Division II First Team All-Region selections, two Conference Players of the Year and one Conference Newcomer of the Year. He was a member of the NCAA Division II National Coaches Poll Committee and was the conference representative on the Advisory Committee to Women’s Basketball Officials Consortium. Plett earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and another in humanities and biblical studies from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, where he competed in basketball and soccer. He and his wife, Brenda have a son, Matt, and a daughter, Stacy. O’Dell helped the Griffons get back to the MIAA Tournament for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. O’Dell coached three seasons with the Cal State Northridge Matadors as an assistant coach after being named to the position on Sept. 24, 2007. With the Matadors, O’Dell’s responsibilities included working with the Matador post players, recruiting, exchanging game film with other schools and serving as a mentor and peer counselor for several players. He also supervised the team’s four student managers and was in charge of the recruitment and coaching of the male practice squad. O’Dell joined the Northridge staff after spending 2006 as the head coach of Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first women’s basketball coach in Silverswords history, O’Dell fulfilled multiple duties in the athletics department, including those of head coach, supervisor of all event management and assistant sports information director. In its inaugural season, the Chaminade women’s basketball team finished 6-19. Before taking over the women’s program in 2006-2007, O’Dell spent three seasons as an assistant coach on the men’s basketball team at Chaminade. Prior to his time with the Silverswords, O’Dell served as an assistant women’s coach at the University of Alaska-Anchorage for five seasons. O’Dell is also a native of Alaska, having been born and raised in Talkeetna. O’Dell graduated from the University of Hawai’i at West O’ahu with a bachelor of arts degree in humanities with an emphasis in history. O’Dell his wife, Christina, and daughter, McKenzie, reside in St. Joseph. Outlook: Is a hard working kid who is always trying to improve...has a great attitude and brings good ability to the #1 Brittany Casady squad...is intelligent on the court and is smart with the ball... will battle for additional playing time and provide depth to the Griffon squad this season. 2010-11 season: Played in 14 games; averaging 7.4 minutes per game. Led team with .917 free-throw percentage, missing just one of 12 shots from the charity stripe. Scored 11 points against Washburn on January, 29. Also finished the season with four steals. 2009-10 season: Played in 27 games with nine starts...averaged 17.4 minutes per game...scored in double figures three times with a career high 14 against Missouri Southern on March 30, 2009...had a career high six rebounds twice against Truman State on January 13, 2010 and Rockhurst on December 16, 2009. 2008-09 season: Saw action in 12 games averaging 10.5 minutes per game... shot .355 from the field and .250 from beyond the arc... recorded 2.3 points per game... averaged 1.3 rebounds per game, which came from 10 defensive and 6 offensive rebounds on the year..
