The Team Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved grade point averages of 3.0 or higher in the same semester /quarter of the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The first female national champion in any sport in the history of Ball State athletics and one of only a small number in school history, Bergman set national records in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard individual medley. She helped Ball State to a ninth-place finish at the 1971 National Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships as the Cardinals placed ahead of Syracuse, Indiana, UCLA, Miami (Fla.), Utah, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Washington State and several other schools. At the 1971 meet, Bergman won the national title in the 100 IM (1:03.2), just behind her national championship clocking of 1:03.0 set in 1970. 3 4 7 She won the national title in 1970 in the 100 back (1:02.3) and finished second in YEAR INDUCTED 1971 (1:03.0). An accomplished scholar with a record of achievement spanning more Pthan three decades, President Ferguson has a demonstrated record of transforming universities, especially in the areas of academic quality and student success, increased research and economic development, partnerships between the university and community, and faculty development.

The institution was named Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The school became a university in 1965 and its 660-acre residential campus now includes more than 60 buildings and 300 additional acres of research property.

Ball State has seven academic colleges and a graduate school with over 150 majors offered, including business, education, sport administration, telecommunications, exercise science, criminal justice, communication studies, journalism, political science and construction management.
