Mhango Smallholder farmers in sub Saharan Africa (SSA) operate in a risky environment characterized by low soil fertility, unpredictable weather and markets. Identification of technologies that optimize crop yields in a variable climate, while building soil fertility, can contribute to sustainable cropping systems. Participatory on-farm trials were conducted in Ekwendeni of northern Malawi to evaluate performance and yield of legume diversified cropping systems. Prior to implementation of trials, household and farm field surveys were conducted to characterize cropping systems and soils. Soil fertility among farms was highly variable and -1 largely coarse textured with very low organic matter (12±3.7 g kg ). There was no evidence of cropping systems effect on nutrient levels except for inorganic P which was lower in legume diversified fields than in maize fields. A survey showed that farmers valued a wide range of legume traits that included food, yield, maturity period, post harvest handling, soil fertility, market potential and pest resistance. On-farm trials evaluated maize-based cropping with a range of legume growth types and planting arrangements (groundnut representing an annual grain legume and pigeonpea representing a semi-perennial grain legume, planted as sole and intercrop systems rotated with maize). The trials were conducted over two years and showed that interspecific competition, inorganic P and plant density markedly influenced crop growth and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). The type of species present in the intercrop – legume or cereal - did not alter the BNF 1 response. On area basis, there was no evidence of higher N fixation rate by groundnut-pigeonpea intercrop (GNPP) “doubled-up legumes” compared to sole stands of either species. Overall performance of intercrops vs sole crops was superior in terms of grain yield produced in the first year of the rotation, as indicated by calculation of a land equivalent ratio (LER). The LERs were 1.50 and 1.56 for GNPP and MZPP compared to sole crops, indicating that intercropped species were more efficient at utilizing resources than sole stands. Performance over the two years of the cropping system was evaluated in 2008/2009. Maize was planted on fields previously planted to sole or intercropped legumes. Indicators of N status (chlorophyll and biomass) showed that maize growth in year two was influenced by cropping system. In contrast, soil inorganic N did not show a response to cropping system. A previous crop of sole or intercropped legumes increased maize grain yields by 21-62% compared to a previous crop of maize. Integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) was also evaluated, -1 comparing all cropping systems with the addition of 24 kg N ha inorganic fertilizer to a -1 continuous maize N-rate study (0, 24 and 92 kg of N ha fertilizer). This allowed estimation of a -1 N-fertilizer equivalency for ISFM maize in year two, which varied from 18 to 55 kg of N ha . Overall, legume presence increased maize yield by 69-200% compared to sole crop, unfertilized maize. A farmer preference survey showed a preference for GNPP/maize rotation even though this system did not optimize yield, followed by pigeonpea/maize rotation, and lastly MZPP/maize systems. Farmers’ choices were based on cropping systems that provide multiple benefits. 2 DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated to my dear parents, Godfrey and Mickness Mhango; and my sisters and brothers for their love and moral support in my whole academic career. KISHINDO* University of Malawi, Malawi ABSTRACT The paper explores how Chingoni, a language of the conquering Ngoni, lost out to Chitumbuka and Chichewa, the languages of the conquered Tumbuka and Chewa respectively, as a language of everyday communication to the extent of being moribund. Since language is usually considered to be a marker of identity, the link between the Ngoni identity and Chingoni is also explored and it is concluded that language is not a sine qua non ingredient of group identity. The paper also examines efforts being made by the Abenguni Revival Association to revive Chingoni which is now considered an endangered language. It concludes that although the efforts are laudable, it is very unlikely that they will produce positive long term results. Keywords: mother tongue, ethnicity/nationalism, endangered language, language planning, group identity, language revival INTRODUCTION The first group to intrude upon nineteenth century Malawi was the militant Ngoni, an offshoot of the Zulu ethnic group of South Africa. Following the death of their leader, Zwangendaba, in 1848 at the southern tip of Lake Tanganyika, and subsequent succession disputes, the Ngoni dispersed in different directions. Of interest for our discussion are the Maseko Ngoni and, especially, the Mpezeni Ngoni who settled in the present day Malawi. The former, under Gomani, settled in the Kirk Range mountains of Dedza and Ntcheu districts, whilst those under Chidyaonga settled in Ntcheu, among the Chewa. Also settled among the Chewa in Dowa district was a minor group under Gwaza Jere.

Initially, it was intended to restrict the sur- vey to the physical aspects of planning, the aspects of settlements, services, service centres and infrastructure in particular. Under an agreement between the Town Planning Department and the University of Utrecht, the authors were assigned the task of surveying the existing pattern of resources of the Northern Region of Malawi with a view to making recommendations for the improved Organisation of physical de- velopment through plans and policies aimed at securing greater co- ordination of development effort, at strengthening and relationalizing infrastructural services, at identifying rural-urban relationships and generally at providing a basic framework for integral planning of the region's land uses. Regional physical planning is, however, closely related to the economie and social development of an area. For the Northern Region agriculture is the basis of the economy and the source of employment for more than 90 % of its population. Consequently, aspects of physi- cal planning cannot be dealt with without paying adequate attention to the agricultural sector, the existing constraints for raising productivity and the attempts of the Malawi government to improve this sector. An expanding agricultural sector earns foreign exchange, provides food for the non-agricultural population, and may increase rural incomes and provide a growing market for manufactured products.

One of such interventions is construction of intake weirs across the Lunyangwa River at the Mzuzu Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and at the Ekwendeni WTP The current weir for the Mzuzu system is located downstream of the Lunyangwa Dam and adjacent to the Mzuzu WTP around longitude/latitude location 34o 3’ 0.53’’ E; 11o 27’ 13.662’’ E. The present weir in Mzuzu resembles a temporary structure and uses an arrangement of sandbags to intercept water in the area between the weir and the Lunyangwa Dam. The regular flow past the weir is estimated at 500 l/s; about 50% of this is abstracted via a 150 mm diameter pipe and is pumped to the Mzuzu water treatment works.

    ACCESSanitation 1 CASE STUDY Embangweni, Malawi Embangweni, Malawi Community driven demand for improved sanitation facilities In 2002 WaterAid, in partnership with the Central Church of Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), initiated a low cost latrine building programme in Embangweni, Malawi. The project introduced a number of ecological sanitation latrines to the community which was largely comprised of subsistence farmers. The project aimed to stimulate demand for sustainable sanitation, utilising community mobilisation to develop a sustainable programme beyond the scope of the project. There was rapid uptake of ecological sanitation at the community level, once the link to the production of cost effective fertilizer was established. This resulted in the households becoming powerful advocates for ecosan, rapidly upscaling the project which is now, as a result of community mobilisation, self-promoting within the region. The town of Embangweni, located in north-western Malawi, has a high resident population of subsistence farmers, who have in recent years experienced increasing levels of poverty, exacerbated by declining soil fertility. It was into this environment of decreasing soil fertility and increasing costs of artificial fertiliser that ecological sanitation (ecosan) was first introduced in 2002, following a partnership between WaterAid and the Central Church of Africa Presbyterian (CCAP). The fundamental principle of the ecosan latrine, is to consider waste as a valuable resource that when managed correctly can provide an economically viable fertiliser. Population: 5.000 In addition, the latrines provide a safe, low cost, easily constructed sanitation facility for the household, improving hygiene and preventing contamination of the immediate environment and surrounding groundwater resources. While initially the project worked with a number of enthusiastic community members, there was rapid uptake of the ecosan ideas by households in Embangweni.
